Canada TURNS TO EUROPE as Carney Makes MAJOR Move Amid Rising U.S. Trade Tensions...

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is preparing to open discussions with the European Union on what he describes as a “unique alliance”, while making it clear that Ottawa is not seeking EU membership.

Speaking Sunday evening in Toronto, Carney pushed back against reports suggesting Canada could pursue “associate member” status within the 27-country bloc.

“We’re not looking to become a member of the European Union,” Carney said.

Instead, he said Canada wants to build a much deeper relationship with Europe based on shared values, common priorities and complementary economic strengths.

The comments came after a Wall Street Journal report said Carney had instructed his team to explore the most ambitious ways Canada could strengthen its relationship with Europe without becoming a full EU member. The report identified “associate member” as one possible title being considered.

A senior Canadian government official told CBC News that several options are being discussed, but stressed that Canada did not propose the “associate member” label. The government’s focus, the official said, is on what deeper ties with Europe could actually deliver for Canada rather than the title itself.
