Emma had just turned eighteen.
Since her mother's death a few years earlier, she had been living alone with her father, Laurent.
The two were very close.
Laurent ran a transport company and often spent several days away from home for work.

"Dad? You said you were going on a business trip!"
Laurent looked at her sternly.
"I got a call saying you were here."

"Darling?"
Emma felt her heart stop.
She immediately looked at her father.
Laurent's face hardened.
"Who are you?" he asked firmly.
The young man seemed surprised.

"My name is Adrien.
I work here."
Seeing that no one understood, he immediately added:
"I'm in charge of welcoming new employees.
I often use 'darling,' 'my friend,' or 'champion' with everyone.
It's a bad habit, nothing more."
Emma finally found her voice again.
“Dad, I came for an interview.
I wanted to find a part-time job to help pay for my studies.
I was just planning to talk to you about it tonight.”
Adrien then showed Laurent the application, the administrative forms, and the employment contract that had just been prepared.
The bar manager joined them a few moments later.
He confirmed that Emma hadn’t come to party.
She had simply come to apply for a student job.
Laurent remained silent.
He looked at his daughter.
Then at the documents.
Finally, he sighed deeply.
“I should have listened to you first.”
Emma looked down.
“And I should have told you about this project before coming.”
On the way home, they talked for hours.

A few weeks later, Emma got the job.
