FBI Raid Rocks LA — Gavin Newsom Furious After Agents Arrest Them All

WASHINGTON - September 2026

The United States Department of Justice has initiated a major legal challenge against municipal authorities in California, filing a federal lawsuit targeting San Jose over its exorbitant concealed-carry permit fees in an escalating executive branch campaign to dismantle local restrictions on Second Amendment rights.

The legal action, filed in federal court in Northern California, specifically challenges San Jose’s 1,591 dollar application fee for a license to carry a concealed firearm. Federal prosecutors argue that the steep financial barrier places an unconstitutional burden on residents seeking to exercise their fundamental right to bear arms for self-defense, noting that the municipality's fee structure stands as a national outlier compared to other major urban centers across the United States.

According to the federal complaint, comparative administrative costs in other major cities remain drastically lower. Washington, D.C., assesses a 75 dollar application fee, Boston charges 100 dollars, Chicago mandates 150 dollars, and New York City requires 340 dollars for a three-year license. Within California, San Francisco charges 144 dollars, while neighboring jurisdictions including Berkeley, Santa Clara County, and Alameda County maintain fee schedules substantially below San Jose's threshold. Records indicate that San Jose elevated its fee to 1,591 dollars in June, representing an increase of nearly 300 dollars over charges levied approximately two and a half years prior.
