He buried her alive with her baby… But the worst betrayal came when Daniel cut the only rope that could save her

The Grave That Couldn't Be Closed

Elena opened her eyes inside a coffin.

The lid wasn't in place, but her wrists and ankles were bound. Above her, she saw a rectangle of gray sky and the face of Victoria, her mother-in-law, watching her from the edge of a deep grave.

Elena shielded her eight-month pregnant belly.

"What are you doing?"

Victoria picked up a shovel.

"I'm going to make sure you and that baby never return to the mansion."

"It's your own grandson!"

"It's the child who will take Daniel's entire inheritance."

Victoria threw the first shovelful of dirt.

Elena turned her face away to shield herself. The dirt fell onto her legs and slowly began to fill the coffin.

"Help! My baby!"

The young woman tried to break the ropes, but only managed to hurt her wrists. Another shovelful covered part of her dress.

Then Rosa came running from the entrance of the family cemetery.

The old servant had seen Victoria carry the coffin out of the mansion and secretly followed her. Upon discovering Elena at the bottom of the grave, she dropped her purse.

"Lady Elena!"

Rosa jumped into the grave.

She landed next to the coffin, pulled out a small knife, and began cutting the ropes.

"Don't be afraid! I'm going to get her out!"

Victoria grabbed the shovel and struck the old woman from above.

"Get out of the way! You'll die with her!"

Rosa shielded Elena's head with her body.

"Then she'll have to bury us both!"

The earth continued to fall. Rosa managed to free the young woman's hands, but the coffin was already half-covered.

"We have to climb up," Elena said.

The walls of the grave were too steep. Rosa tried to brace her feet against the earth, but it kept giving way.

At that moment, Daniel appeared, holding a rope.

Elena felt hope return.

"Daniel! Get us out of here!"

He threw one end down.

Rosa tied it around Elena's waist and began to pull her up.

"Go up first!" the old woman ordered.

Daniel pulled on the rope. Elena slowly ascended until she was close to the edge.

"I knew you'd come," she said through tears.

But Victoria handed her son a knife.

"If you pull her up, you'll lose everything you own."

Daniel looked at Elena.

"I'm sorry."

He cut the rope.

The young woman fell back down. Rosa managed to catch her before she hit the coffin.

"Daniel!" Elena cried. "Your child is inside me!"

"That baby will inherit the company as soon as it's born." Mom is right: I can't allow it.

Rosa helped Elena to her feet. The young woman found an exposed root and managed to grab the edge with both hands.

Victoria lifted her foot to step on her toes.

Then the base of a huge gravestone began to give way.

The stone tilted directly toward the grave.

"Watch out!" Rosa shouted.

The old woman pushed Elena toward a small opening in one of the walls. Then she positioned herself over it to protect her stomach.

The gravestone fell.

The impact raised a cloud of dust and shook the cemetery. However, the stone didn't reach the bottom. It remained wedged between the two walls of the tomb, forming a kind of sloping roof over the two women.

Elena opened her eyes.

"Rosa?"

"I'm still here."

The old woman's shoulder was injured, but she was conscious. Part of the coffin had been crushed, although the opening protected them.

Above, Daniel leaned over the grave.

"They're still alive."

Victoria handed him the shovel.

"Then finish covering them."

Daniel began throwing dirt onto the gravestone. The weight made the stone slowly lower.

Rosa noticed an opening behind the coffin. It looked like the entrance to an old family crypt.

"Help me move this wood."

Together, they moved aside a broken board and entered the narrow passageway. Elena moved with difficulty because her contractions had started.

"The baby's coming..."

"We have to find another way out."

Inside the crypt were several niches and a dusty sarcophagus. On the wall was the name Isabel Montenegro, Grandfather Alejandro's first wife.

Elena found a metal box next to the tomb.

Inside were letters, photographs, and the family's true will.

Victoria had hidden those documents years before. The will proved that Daniel would not inherit the company. Alejandro had designated the majority of his fortune to a foundation for the children of deceased employees.

"So they tried to kill us over an inheritance that didn't exist," Elena said.

A loud bang interrupted the conversation.

Daniel had descended into the crypt with the knife.

"Give me that box."

Rosa stepped in front of Elena.

"You'll have to get over me first."

Daniel moved forward, but the floor beneath his feet gave way. He was trapped up to his waist between some ancient planks.

"Help me!" he cried.

Victoria appeared in the entrance to the passageway.

"Leave him alone! Bring the box!"

Daniel looked at her in horror.

"Are you going to abandon me?"

"The documents are more important."

Elena understood that Victoria was willing to sacrifice even her own son.

Although Daniel had tried to kill her, Elena took a rope from the old coffin and threw it toward him.

"Hold on."

Rosa and Elena managed to pull Daniel out. But as soon as he was free, he tried to snatch the box from them again.

Then sirens wailed above the cemetery.

Before jumping into the tomb, Rosa had activated the emergency call on her watch. The device transmitted her location and recorded the entire conversation.

Several police officers and rescuers entered the crypt through the main passageway. Victoria tried to escape, but the exit was blocked by the fallen gravestone.

Daniel dropped the knife.

"My mother planned everything."

"You cut the rope!" Victoria shouted. "You wanted to kill the baby!"

Her accusations were captured on the officers' body cameras.

Elena suffered another contraction and fell to her knees.

The rescuers rushed her to the hospital. Rosa stayed with her the entire way.

Hours later, Elena gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

She named her Alma Rosa.

Daniel and Victoria were convicted of kidnapping, attempted murder, and conspiracy. Rosa's watch, the knife, the tomb, and her own confessions proved the entire plan.

The true will was legally recognized. The company passed into the hands of the foundation, just as Alejandro had decided.

The family cemetery was restored, and the crypt became a small monument dedicated to the workers who had helped build the family's fortune.

Elena asked that the broken tombstone remain by the entrance. Underneath it, she placed a phrase:

"They tried to bury us to hide the truth, but the tomb opened and let out everything they had hidden."

Years later, Alma asked why she bore Rosa's name.

Elena pointed to the old woman, who was walking toward them with flowers.

"Because when the earth began to give way, she didn't seek help from above. She jumped into the tomb to stay with me."

Alma ran to hug her.

Rosa gazed at the broken tombstone and smiled. Victoria had prepared that place to become the final resting place of two lives. But it ended up becoming the place where a mother, a daughter, and a brave woman started a new family.
