For three weeks, Marcos followed the same routine every evening.
After finishing school, work, and everything else life demanded of him, he would sit beside his younger brother’s bed. He never pressured him to talk. He never asked difficult questions. He simply stayed.
Sometimes they watched television in silence.
Other nights, Marcos opened the same dinosaur book Tomás had received for his birthday months earlier. Somehow, despite everything that had happened, it remained the only story Tomás wanted to hear.
Marcos would read about towering brachiosauruses, armored ankylosauruses, and fearless triceratopses. The facts hardly mattered anymore.
What mattered was that Tomás listened.
And for the first time since losing their mother, that was enough.
One evening, halfway through a chapter, Tomás suddenly broke the silence.
“Are you going to leave too?”
Marcos slowly closed the book.
The question settled heavily between them.
“No,” he answered.
Tomás looked unconvinced.
“How do you know?”
Marcos thought carefully before responding.
“Because I choose not to,” he finally said. “I know that probably isn’t the answer you’re looking for, but it’s the only honest one I have.”
Tomás considered this for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
“Okay.”
It wasn’t a dramatic conversation.
But it was the first step toward healing.
Weeks later, the two brothers found themselves inside a courtroom.
The hearing would determine where Tomás would live and what their future would look like.
Most people expected paperwork, procedures, and routine decisions.
Nobody expected a sixteen-year-old boy to stand before the court and speak from the heart.
As Marcos approached the podium, Tomás walked beside him.
That wasn’t part of the plan.
Yet when Tomás wrapped his arms around his brother and quietly leaned against him, Marcos understood something important.
Sometimes the strongest evidence isn’t found in documents.
Sometimes it’s standing right beside you.
Looking directly at the judge, Marcos took a deep breath.
“I don’t know all the legal terms,” he began. “I’m not an expert. I’m just a sixteen-year-old trying to do what’s right.”
The courtroom fell silent.
“Tomás eats when I cook for him. He sleeps better when I read to him. When life became difficult, we got through it together. Those details aren’t written in any report, but they’re real.”
His voice trembled.
Not from fear.
From truth.
“I know I can’t replace what we’ve lost,” Marcos continued. “But I do know this: we’re family. And whatever happens next, we shouldn’t be separated.”
No one moved.
No one spoke.
For a moment, the entire room seemed to stop breathing.
Then Marcos said the words that everyone would remember long after the hearing ended.
“I may not have all the answers,” he said quietly. “But I will always take care of my brother.”

And suddenly, this was no longer just another court case.
It was a story about responsibility, loyalty, and the extraordinary bond between two brothers who refused to give up on each other.
