The Puppy That Changed His Life

The street in Naples was cold and damp, covered by a gray sky that made everything even heavier. Cars passed slowly, people walked hurriedly, and almost no one looked at the man sitting near a wall, his clothes worn and his hands red with cold.

His name was Antonio. For months he had lived on the streets, trying each day to find a sheltered corner and something to eat. That late afternoon, he had only a small piece of sausage, the last food he had left.

He was about to eat when he heard a weak whimper.

Near the sidewalk, next to a parked car, was a very small puppy. It was trembling, wet and frightened, too weak even to bark.

Antonio looked at the puppy. Then he looked at the piece of food in his hand.

He didn't think twice.

He knelt down slowly and extended the food to the puppy.

“Take it, little one… you need this more than I do.”

The puppy approached timidly, sniffed his hand, and began to eat. Antonio smiled slightly, his eyes tired but full of kindness. For a few seconds, he forgot the cold, the hunger, and the loneliness.

Then a black luxury car stopped near the sidewalk. An elegant woman got out running. When she saw the puppy, she put her hands to her face.

“We’ve been looking for you for months!”

She knelt down and hugged the little dog, crying with relief. Then she looked up at Antonio. She saw that he was shivering from the cold, she saw his old clothes, she saw that he had given the animal the only thing he had.

The woman was silent for a moment.

“Sir, you saved a part of our family,” she said emotionally.
