CHAPTER 7 – The Secret Hidden Since the Wedding

CHAPTER 7 – The Secret Hidden Since the Wedding
The courtroom was packed on the morning of the final hearings.
What had begun as a financial fraud case had become national news.
Everyone expected the judge to determine how much Grace and Naomi would repay.
No one expected another witness.
An elderly man slowly entered the courtroom with a walking cane.
Daniel immediately recognized him.
"Uncle Hassan?"
Hassan had been his late father's closest friend. Years earlier, he had disappeared from the city after suffering a stroke.
The prosecutor smiled.
"Mr. Hassan recently recovered enough to testify."
Grace's face lost all color.
"No..."
Hassan looked directly at her.
"You know why I'm here."
The courtroom fell silent.
"I promised my friend, Ibrahim, that I would keep one document safe until Daniel became strong enough to stand on his own."
He handed a sealed envelope to the judge.
Inside was a notarized letter written by Daniel's father only weeks before his death.
The judge read it aloud.
"If anything happens to me, this house, my savings, and every future investment belong equally to my son Daniel and his future family. No one—not even his mother—has the right to remove his wife or children from what I have built."
Grace closed her eyes.
The letter continued.
"My wife has always believed that love is ownership. If she ever mistreats Daniel's wife, I ask my son to protect his family first. Honor without justice is only another form of cowardice."
Daniel felt tears burn his eyes.
His father had known.
Years before any of this happened...
He had known.
The prosecutor called one final witness.
A former domestic worker who had worked in the villa for three years.
She testified calmly.
"Madam Grace ordered me never to serve meat to Mrs. Amara."
Grace looked away.
"She said the children should eat whatever leftovers remained."
Another witness confirmed it.
Then another.
One by one, former employees described the same pattern.
Humiliation.
Starvation.
Threats.
Isolation.
One maid quietly wiped away tears.
"I resigned because I couldn't watch those children cry from hunger anymore."
Daniel lowered his head.
Beside him, Amara silently held his hand.
Then came the question that had haunted everyone.
The prosecutor looked at Grace.
"Why?"
"You already had the house."
"You had the money."
"Why continue hurting your own grandchildren?"
Grace remained silent.
For nearly a minute.
Then, finally, she spoke.
"When Daniel married Amara..."
"...he stopped asking me before making decisions."
"I was no longer the most important woman in his life."
Gasps echoed through the courtroom.
Grace continued through tears.
"I wanted him to choose me."
"I thought..."
"...if Amara suffered long enough..."
"...she would leave."
Daniel stared at the woman who had given him life.
He barely recognized her.
Years of greed had begun with something even darker.
Possession.
The judge removed his glasses.
"In thirty-two years on this bench..."
"I have heard many motives."
"But a grandmother starving her own grandchildren because she could not accept sharing her son's love..."
"...is among the most heartbreaking."
The courtroom remained silent.
No one applauded.

No one celebrated.
There was nothing to celebrate.
