Chapter 1

Owen Bennett had already been trying to move.
He was wearing his best navy suit, gripping the silver cane that once belonged to his late father, when Grant Halston decided the boy was standing too close to the cameras.
“If you can’t keep up, stay out of the way,” Grant said.
Then his polished black shoe struck the underside of Owen’s prosthetic leg.
The artificial knee buckled.
Owen crashed onto the marble floor. His silver cane flew from his hand, striking a champagne glass and sending broken glass across the ballroom.
No one moved.
The wealthy guests simply stared as Owen struggled to lift himself.
“Please…” he gasped. “I was moving.”
Grant stood over him, still holding his champagne.
“You fell,” he said coldly. “Don’t blame me.”
Across the room, Rachel Bennett heard the metallic crash.
She turned—and saw her son lying on the floor, his prosthetic leg twisted beneath him.
Her glass slipped from her hand.
“Owen!”
Rachel ran through the crowd and dropped beside him.
Owen clung to her dress, shaking.
“He kicked me, Mom.”
Rachel slowly looked up at Grant.
“You kicked my son?”
Grant gave her a faint smile.
“He was in my way.”
What Rachel did next silenced the entire ballroom.
But when Grant rose from the shattered champagne table, he looked at her with pure rage and said:
“You just ruined your life.”
Rachel thought he was only threatening her.
She had no idea the man standing before her controlled her job, the museum’s largest donation—and a secret involving millions of dollars meant to help disabled children.
By morning, the video spreading online would show Rachel attacking a billionaire.

It would not show what he had done to Owen first.
And hidden inside Owen’s jacket was a torn piece of paper that could bring the Halston family down.
