Chapter 10 - The Geometry of Return

The morning sun rose over the Glarus Alps with a clarity that turned the white snow into a field of small, silver diamonds. The air was perfectly still, the lake below the villa looking like a mirror that had been dropped between the mountains, its indigo water reflecting the white peaks with an accuracy that made it impossible to tell where the earth ended and the sky began.

Nikolai and Alexei stood together on the terrace, their breath forming small, white clouds in the crisp morning air.

They were dressed identically—dark coats of heavy wool, white cotton shirts, and polished black leather shoes that made a sharp, rhythmic sound against the granite tiles as they walked to the edge of the wall.

Mikhail was waiting at the lower gate with the car, its engine idling with a low, musical purr that didn't disturb the birds in the larch trees. Today they were leaving for Geneva—not to flee a warrant or to hide from a shadow, but to attend the opening of the new commercial tower on the Rue du Rhône, a building of glass and pale granite that bore the name Vulov & Fils above the entrance.

"The pen," Alexei said, reaching into his pocket and producing a slim, black cylinder of gold and resin. It was the same Montblanc that had fallen to the floor of St. Augustine’s seven years ago, its white star glinting under the alpine sun. "You left it on the desk."

Nikolai took the pen, looking at the smooth black barrel before sliding it into his breast pocket, right next to the small, re-taped paperback of Treasure Island he had never removed from his overcoat lining.

"Thank you, Alexei," Nikolai said.

He looked at the boy—his son, his blood, his return. The gap between his teeth was gone, replaced by the straight, white alignment of a young man who had been remade by a father’s hand. The crescent on his shoulder was hidden beneath four layers of expensive wool, but it was there, sitting in the hollow of the bone, a permanent mark of the crows that follow the first-born through the snow.

"Are you ready?" Nikolai asked.

May you like

"I have been ready since the Tuesday in November," Alexei said, his green eyes turning to face the sun without blinking.

They walked down the granite stairs together, their steps perfectly synchronized, their shadows stretching behind them across the white snow like a long, dark line that had finally found its home. They didn't look back at the villa, and they didn't look back at the valley; they kept their eyes level and their shoulders square, moving forward into the clean, cold light of a world that had tried to break them, and had instead given them a kingdom.
