Chapter 6 - A New DawnThree months later, the Connecticut estate felt entirely different.

The oppressive silence that once haunted the marble hallways had been replaced by the sound of running footsteps, echoing laughter, and the bright, energetic chatter of two healthy six-year-old boys.
Jacob and Jonah were no longer pale, lethargic shadows of themselves. Their color had returned, their cheeks were full, and every afternoon they raced across the meticulously manicured gardens, chasing each other through the fountains while the golden sunlight bathed the glass-walled mansion in warmth.
Dr. Reeves and Mrs. Bennett were awaiting trial in a maximum-security federal facility, facing multiple charges ranging from corporate fraud and conspiracy to attempted murder and the wrongful death of Rebecca Coleman. The entire pharmaceutical laundering ring had unraveled as federal investigators used the ledgers and digital drives recovered from Reeves’s office to clean out the corruption from top to bottom.
And as for me?
I was no longer just the temporary live-in nanny.
Standing on the back veranda with a cup of tea in my hand, I watched Jacob and Jonah score a winning goal in a makeshift soccer game on the lawn. Nathan walked up beside me, handing me a fresh pastry from the kitchen. He looked relaxed, wearing a casual linen shirt instead of his usual heavy business suits, the harsh lines of exhaustion completely gone from his face.
"They have soccer practice again tomorrow," Nathan said with a soft, genuine smile. "And Jonah asked if we could all go camping this weekend in Vermont."
I turned to look at him, smiling back. "Camping? Are you sure you're ready to trade marble staircases and glass walls for sleeping bags and campfires?"
"With you there to keep an eye on things?" Nathan chuckled, stepping closer, his dark eyes warm and steady. "I’d follow you anywhere, Emily. You proved that."

The wind swept softly through the garden roses, carrying the sweet scent of blooming summer flowers—clean, natural, and entirely pure. The past was behind us, buried beneath the wreckage of lies and betrayal, while ahead lay a future built on truth, healing, and a love neither of us had ever expected to find.
Nathan reached out, gently taking my hand in his. As the twins cheered wildly across the lawn, I knew the darkest chapters of our lives were finally closed, and the brightest one was just beginning.
