CHAP 4 — What Ethan Saw

Daniel tried to perform fatherhood.

That was the ugliest part.

He lowered the bat slightly and softened his voice.

“Ethan, buddy. Come here.”

Ethan sobbed into my cardigan.

Daniel’s face hardened for only a second.

Then he remembered the cameras he did not know were there and forced the gentleness back.

“He’s confused,” Daniel said to Sheriff Walker. “Laura left tonight. He’s upset.”

I looked at the sheriff.

“Did you search Daniel’s basement before helping him force entry into my home?”

Walker’s jaw tightened.

“This is not your investigation.”

“No,” I said. “It’s yours to explain.”

Daniel stepped closer.

I lifted my hidden hand a fraction beneath the blanket.

He stopped.

Smart enough.

Barely.

“Evelyn,” he said through clenched teeth, “you are interfering with a lawful custody matter.”

“Then hand me the warrant.”

Sheriff Walker did not move.

“Hand it to me,” I repeated.

He placed the paper on the table but kept one hand on it, like a child guarding a failed test.

I looked down.

The signature was a stamp.

Not even a good one.

The time field had been left blank.

The probable cause paragraph described a kidnapping reported at 3:28 a.m.

But Daniel had threatened me over the intercom at 3:24.

They had written the story after starting the crime.

“You boys got sloppy,” I said.

Daniel’s eyes flared.

Ethan lifted his head just enough to see him.

Then the boy whispered, “Mom was still moving.”

Every adult in the room froze.

I turned toward him carefully.

“What did you say?”

Ethan swallowed hard.

“When Dad rolled the rug. Her foot moved.”

Daniel exploded.

“Shut up!”

The bat rose.

Sheriff Walker grabbed Daniel’s sleeve, not to protect us, but to stop him from ruining the narrative too quickly.

Too late.

The microphones had everything.

I looked at Daniel.

“You didn’t finish it.”

His face changed.

For one breath, I saw the truth.

Laura was alive when Ethan ran.

Maybe still alive.

Maybe not.

But every second mattered.

A heavy vehicle rolled onto the gravel outside.

Then another.

Daniel heard it.

Sheriff Walker turned toward the shattered doorway.

Blue and red lights flashed again.

But these were not county cruisers.

Captain Torres had arrived.
