Chapter 2: The Court of Vipers

The ballroom had fallen into a deafening, toxic silence. Five hundred pairs of eyes were locked onto the scene unfolding in the center of the marble floor. No one stepped in to help. In this world, reputation was currency, and Evelyn and Lily were currently bankrupt.

Evelyn threw her arms out, positioning her body as a human shield between her sobbing daughter and her furious husband. She could feel Lily clutching the fabric of her red dress, burying her wet face against Evelyn’s leg, shaking like a leaf in a hurricane.

Julian’s chest heaved beneath his tailored white tuxedo. He looked down at Evelyn, his eyes burning with a mixture of disgust and unchecked dominance. He didn't care that he was terrorizing a child. He didn't care that he was humiliating his wife.

He leaned forward, his face flushed with rage, and screamed at Evelyn for the entire room to hear.

"That's what happens when you raise a thief!" Julian roared, the sheer volume of his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings and crystal chandeliers.

The words struck Evelyn like a physical blow. The absolute audacity, the cruelty of branding an innocent little girl a criminal in front of the most powerful people in the city, was a poison that seeped into Evelyn’s veins.

Before Evelyn could even fire back, another figure stepped into the fray.

It was Eleanor, Julian’s mother. The matriarch of the family stood flawlessly composed in a champagne-colored silk gown, adorned with a massive fabric rose at her waist and a heavy string of pearls around her neck. Her silver hair was perfectly coiffed, her posture rigid.

Eleanor didn't look at the sobbing child. She didn't reprimand her son for screaming in public. Instead, she fixed Evelyn with a gaze of pure, aristocratic condescension.

"Evelyn," Eleanor commanded, her voice cold, flat, and dripping with disdain. "Stop making a fuss."

Stop making a fuss.

Those five words stopped time.

As Evelyn looked from the weeping child clinging to her leg, to the screaming monster in the white tuxedo, and finally to the cold, soulless woman in the champagne dress, something inside her fundamentally snapped.

For years, she had endured their quiet insults. She had swallowed her pride to give Lily a home of privilege. But in this exact second, looking at the tears staining her daughter's innocent face, Evelyn realized a horrifying truth: this family was a disease. If she stayed, they wouldn't just break her; they would destroy her daughter’s soul.
