Chapter 6 - Adrian Tried to Turn Me Into the Criminal

The account was at Summit Atlantic Bank.

Opened online.

Owner:

Claire Bennett.

My Social Security number.

My driver's license.

My former Washington address.

Authentication used selfie verification.

There was even a video.

A woman who looked enough like me in low resolution held ID beside face.

Not me.

Investigators believed synthetic/deepfake-assisted identity verification combined with stolen documentation.

The account received $750,000 from Aster Ridge.

Then transferred $600,000 to brokerage platform.

No transactions by me.

But access logs showed IP addresses from Vale mansion.

Where I lived.

Adrian's attorney filed civil complaint accusing me of:

* theft;

* computer intrusion;

* fraudulent account creation;

* conspiracy with Helena.

Media exploded.

RUNAWAY BRIDE RECEIVED $750K FROM VALE SHELL COMPANY BEFORE ALTAR STUNT

Exactly narrative he wanted.

People online turned.

“She was after money.”

“Both sides toxic.”

“Maybe bruises fake.”

I stopped reading comments after two minutes.

Federal investigators had not charged me.

But reputational damage immediate.

Former colleagues called.

Some supportive.

One asked awkwardly:

“Is there anything you need to tell us before press contacts?”

That hurt.

Professional credibility was my identity.

Adrian knew.

He did not need convict.

Just contaminate.

Mara said:

“This was always his contingency.”

“How do we prove?”

“Forensics.”

Account metadata.

Device fingerprints.

Identity-video artifacts.

Email creation.

We dug.

My email supposedly used to open account:

claire.bennett.fin@proton...

Not mine.

But recovery phone ended 4417.

A prepaid number purchased cash near Vale office.

Camera footage unavailable after months.

Then a breakthrough: online bank required voice phrase during verification.

Recording existed.

“Claire Bennett” saying:

I authorize account opening.

AI analysis showed synthetic voice built from samples.

Where get samples?

I had presented webinars publicly.

Plenty.

No easy link to Adrian.

Then money transfer authorization used digital certificate issued by Vale Meridian internal cybersecurity subsidiary.

Why would external bank accept? It was enterprise identity provider connected to Aster Ridge transaction portal.

Certificate administrator:

Leon Fisk, Vale cybersecurity director.

He disappeared after wedding.

Investigators located him in Costa Rica.

Not fugitive formally, but suspicious.

Through counsel, Fisk negotiated cooperation.

He admitted Adrian's chief counsel Gavin Price instructed him create credential package for “estate-planning test accounts.”

He did not know full purpose initially.

Then saw my name.

Asked.

Gavin said prenup structure.

Fisk complied.

Later realized odd.

After church, Gavin told him delete certificate logs.

Fisk backed up and left country because panicked.

The logs showed I never authenticated.

Adrian’s team did.

Good.

But then Gavin Price died? Avoid convenient. He was charged.

He turned on Adrian eventually.

Before that, Adrian personally approached me.

Against protective boundaries?

He appeared at courthouse after hearing.

Security nearby.

“Claire.”

I kept walking.

“I can make this stop.”

Mara said don't engage.

I stopped anyway.

“What?”

“Public allegations.”

“You filed them.”

“I can withdraw.”

“In exchange?”

“Tell Helena to settle.”

“I don't control Helena.”

“Bullshit.”

“She's a person.”

He laughed.

“You two think you're righteous.”

He stepped closer.

“You know what happens when Vale collapses? Twelve thousand employees.”

Again hostages.

“You can save company.”

“How?”

“Sign statement that you independently created Aster Ridge structure and discovered Helena through research without evidence of intentional family wrongdoing.”

I stared.

“You want me to confess to your fraud.”

“No criminal confession. Civil responsibility.”

“How generous.”

“You'd be protected financially.”

He lowered voice.

“I'll transfer twenty million into irrevocable trust for you.”

There.

Twenty million for lie.

“Why would I trust you?”

“You trusted me enough to marry.”

“Almost.”

His face changed.

That still hurt ego.

“You think you're free because wedding didn't happen?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

He leaned.

“You have no idea how much of your life I own.”

Old threat.

But cameras courthouse.

Witnesses.

I said:

“Say that again.”

He noticed Mara's phone recording openly.

He walked away.

Not enough legally maybe, but revealing.

Then something more important happened.

My former colleague Nathan Cho contacted me.

He had attended one dinner with Adrian early relationship.

“Nathan?”

“I remembered something.”

“What?”

“Adrian asked me about forensic authentication.”

“When?”

“Ten months ago.”

My stomach tightened.

“What exactly?”

“He asked how regulators distinguish employee misconduct from management-directed fraud.”

Could be general.

Nathan thought professional curiosity.

Then Adrian asked:

“If someone with forensic background stole funds, would their expertise make detection harder or suspicion stronger?”

Nathan joked stronger.

Adrian smiled.

He was testing narrative.

Nathan had email after dinner:

Interesting discussion tonight. Especially your point that specialist knowledge creates inference of sophistication.

Evidence premeditation.

Not conclusive but pattern.

Then Maria found something in old bridal dressing room at mansion? She had quit, but returned belongings. She contacted:

“Ms. Claire, I have your wedding flowers.”

“What?”

My bouquet had been preserved temporarily for photographer then placed storage.

Why care?

Because I had hidden a tiny recorder inside bouquet stem wrap.

I had almost forgotten amid chaos.

Mara knew I planned? Recording laws Florida two-party consent issues. But church public environment and Adrian whispers maybe expectation? We need be careful. This is fiction, not legal advice. The recording captured close conversations before ceremony, including Adrian and Celeste in bridal corridor? Recorder in bouquet in my possession. Could capture conversations while held. Potential admissibility debated.

I used recorder not to gather private conversation illegally? It recorded ambient church and my interaction as participant. Fine.

We retrieved.

Audio began in bridal suite.

Celeste adjusting veil.

Then Adrian entered briefly before ceremony, violating tradition.

He whispered to mother while I was in restroom adjacent:

“After today, Bennett accounts merge and Gavin can close the exposure.”

Celeste:

“She still asks too many questions.”

Adrian:

“Once she signs marital trust, it doesn't matter.”

Celeste:

“And if she refuses?”

Adrian:

“She won’t. She’s learned.”

My stomach turned.

Then Celeste:

“What about Helena file?”

Adrian:

“Dead women don't audit.”

Silence in Mara's office.

There.

He knew.

Minutes before wedding, Adrian referenced Helena file and plan to use marriage.

The recording became critical—subject to admissibility litigation, but investigators could use leads.

Then another segment captured Adrian when he crushed hand:

“From today on, you belong to me. Don't ever forget your place.”

My response.

Witness.

Then chaos.

The bouquet I had carried down aisle was not romantic decoration.

It was a black box.

May you like

And inside was Adrian's assumption that by noon, he had won.
