Chapter 2: Picking Up the Pieces

The mansion was silent days later.

The flowers had wilted. The decorations were gone. And the echoes of laughter had been replaced with emptiness.

Ethan sat on the edge of Noah’s bed, gently brushing his hair back as the boy slept. Tear stains still marked his cheeks, even in rest.

Ethan’s heart broke all over again.

“I failed you,” he whispered softly.

But healing doesn’t happen in a single moment.

The next morning, Ethan made pancakes—badly shaped, slightly burned—but Noah smiled for the first time since the wedding.

It was small.

But it mattered.

Days turned into weeks. Ethan rearranged his life completely. He worked from home more, read bedtime stories every night, and made sure Noah never felt alone again.

One evening, while they were building a toy castle together, Noah hesitated before speaking.

“Daddy… am I really not important?”

The question cut deeper than anything.

Ethan immediately pulled him close.

“You are the most important person in my life,” he said firmly. “Nothing and no one will ever change that.”

Noah nodded slowly, as if trying to believe it.

Meanwhile, Olivia struggled alone.

She replayed that moment over and over—the fear in Noah’s eyes, the disgust in Ethan’s voice. What she had done wasn’t just a mistake. It revealed something she hadn’t wanted to face about herself.
