CHAPTER 1: The Woman in Plain Clothes

6:40 in the evening, the Grand Aurelia Hotel was glowing with the kind of wealth that made ordinary people instinctively lower their voices. Crystal chandeliers dripped light over polished white marble. Gold-trimmed columns caught every reflection. Red velvet ropes separated the open lobby from the private VIP corridor. Elegant guests moved through the space in silk, black tuxedos, and measured confidence.
Then the young woman walked in.
She wore a cream knit top, gray trousers, beige flats, and carried a beige handbag in her left hand. Nothing about her looked expensive enough for the room. Her brown hair was tied in a neat low bun. Her face was calm, almost quiet, the kind of calm people misread when they are too used to judging by appearances.
Several guests glanced at her and then away with the faint amusement of people who believe they understand class at a glance.
The young woman ignored them. She walked straight across the marble toward the frosted VIP double doors at the far end of the lobby.
That was when hotel security stepped in.
The guard was a large man in a black uniform with a stiff posture and a practiced expression of authority. He moved directly into her path, one hand lifting just enough to block her without seeming openly aggressive.
“VIP guests only,” he said coldly.
The woman stopped.
Not startled. Not embarrassed. Just still.
Around them, a few guests slowed down. A blonde woman in a red dress half turned to watch. A man near the reception desk smirked as if the evening had finally offered some entertainment.
May you like
The young woman met the guard’s eyes and answered in a low, even voice.
“I’m expected.”
