Chapter 4 — Awakening

Chapter 4 — Awakening
The room became unnaturally still.
Even the armed men stopped breathing.
Adrian Cross stared at Ethan.
No smile.
No smug superiority.
Just calculation.
Because he knew something no one else in the room understood.
Ethan wasn’t bluffing.
Dr. Adrian Cross had seen that look before.
In the laboratory.
Years ago.
Subject E-7 at age four had solved advanced pattern recognition tests faster than supercomputers.
At age six, he had predicted security rotations.
At age eight, he had escaped a locked medical wing using nothing but observation.
At age nine…
He had done something Adrian never forgot.
He looked at twelve trained guards and correctly identified which three would panic first under pressure.
He was right.
Every single time.
Adrian slowly smiled again.
“Beautiful.”
Ethan stood motionless.
Blood continued running down the side of his face, but his breathing had stabilized completely.
His heartbeat slowed.
His eyes scanned.
Left.
Right.
Ceiling.
Weapons.
Positions.
Probabilities.
Ava saw it happening.
His brain was processing faster than humanly possible.
Her voice trembled.
“Ethan…”
He didn’t turn.
But he answered.
Softly.
“I know.”
Ava’s tears fell harder.
Because his voice had changed.
Still Ethan.
But sharper.
Colder.
Like something hidden had awakened.
Adrian spread his arms.
“Show me.”
Ethan said nothing.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Come on.”
He smiled.
“Show your father what perfection looks like.”
Victor Whitmore roared.
“He is not yours!”
Victor Whitmore
Adrian didn’t even glance at him.
“He carries my design.”
Margaret screamed.
“He carries our love!”
Margaret Whitmore
Adrian laughed.
“Love?”
He looked disgusted.
“Love is chemical weakness.”
Ethan finally spoke.
“No.”
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
Ethan took one step forward.
“Love is the only reason you already lost.”
Adrian’s smile faded.
A masked guard tightened his grip on Ava’s arms.
Big mistake.
Ethan noticed the pressure shift in the guard’s right foot.
Weight imbalance.
Dominant side.
Weak elbow lock.
Predictable reflex.
Time slowed.
Thirty seconds.
No.
Twenty-three.
That was enough.
Adrian whispered,
“Now.”
The guards raised their guns.
Ethan moved.
Too fast.
The first guard didn’t even see him.
Ethan pivoted, drove his elbow into the man’s throat—
Crack.
The guard collapsed.
Gun loose.
Ethan caught it mid-air.
Second guard fired.
Bang.
Ethan twisted.
The bullet hit the first guard’s shoulder instead.
Ava screamed.
Lena dropped to the floor.
Lena
Ethan slammed the gun into the second guard’s wrist.
Bone snapped.
Gun fell.
Third attacker lunged with a knife.
Ethan trapped the wrist.
Turned.
Dislocated shoulder.
Knife reversed.
Dropped.
Fourth guard came from behind.
Victor shouted.
“Behind you!”
Too late?
No.
Ethan already knew.
He ducked.
Used momentum.
Sent the attacker crashing into a desk.
Wood exploded.
The detective stared in disbelief.
“This is impossible…”
Adrian whispered.
“No.”
His eyes gleamed.
“This is evolution.”
Five guards remained.
They attacked together.
Wrong choice.
Ethan’s mind mapped trajectories instantly.
Attack angles.
Reaction delays.
Joint limits.
He moved like flowing mathematics.
Strike.
Dodge.
Counter.
Every movement perfect.
No wasted energy.
No hesitation.
Within seconds—
Bodies hit the floor.
Groaning.
Broken.
Defeated.
Only Adrian remained standing.
Silence.
Heavy silence.
Ava could barely breathe.
This was Ethan.
But also not.
She saw intelligence stripped of emotional hesitation.
Pure execution.
Adrian looked thrilled.
Actually thrilled.
He clapped slowly.
“One minute earlier than projections.”
Ethan pointed the gun at him.
“Let them go.”
Adrian smiled.
“Or?”
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
“I kill you.”
Adrian stepped closer.
Toward the gun.
Fearless.
“No.”
He looked directly into Ethan’s eyes.
“You won’t.”
“Try me.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You can calculate trajectories.”
He tapped his temple.
“Predict motion.”
Another step forward.
“Analyze behavior.”
Another.
“But there’s one variable you still cannot defeat.”
Ethan frowned.
Adrian smiled.
“Emotion.”
Click.
A beep sounded.
Ava’s face went pale.
No.
Adrian held up a remote.
“No…”
Ava whispered.
“No, no, no—”
Ethan’s heart dropped.
“What is that?”
Adrian’s smile widened.
“Insurance.”
He pressed the screen.
A biometric scan appeared.
Ava Sinclair.
Ava Sinclair
Heart rate.
Blood pressure.
Fetal activity.
Ethan froze.
Ava sobbed.
“He planted something in me…”
Adrian nodded.
“During your hospital stay after the crash.”
Victor went pale.
“You monster.”
Adrian ignored him.
“Nanoscopic implant.”
He looked at Ethan.
“Connected to her circulatory system.”
Ava shook violently.
“If it detonates…”
Adrian finished.
“She dies.”
He paused.
“And so does E-8.”
E-8
Ethan’s hand tightened around the gun.
But he didn’t fire.
Adrian smiled.
“There.”
He pointed.
“That hesitation.”
He moved even closer.
“You still love.”
Ethan’s voice became deadly quiet.
“What do you want?”
Adrian answered instantly.
“You.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Adrian’s expression turned fanatical.
“You are proof.”
He gestured wildly.
“The experiment worked!”
“Generation two exists!”
“Human evolution is here!”
His breathing became uneven.
Obsessive.
Mad.
“With you and E-8, we can reshape civilization.”
Ethan said one word.
“No.”
Adrian’s eyes darkened.
“I wasn’t asking.”
Margaret suddenly spoke.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
She slowly stood.
Bruised.
Cuffed.
Shaking.
But something inside her had changed.
No manipulation.
No performance.
Only a mother.
Adrian smirked.
“You?”
Margaret stepped forward.
“Yes.”
Victor frowned.
“Margaret…”
She ignored him.
Tears streamed down her face.
She looked at Ethan.
Her son.
The boy she had raised.
The child she had held through nightmares.
The boy who called her Mom.
Maybe not by blood.
But by everything else that mattered.
Her voice broke.
“I spent years trying to control him.”
She looked at Ava.
“I hurt the woman he loves.”
At Victor.
“I became someone monstrous.”
At Adrian.
“But one truth remains.”
She lifted her chin.
“He is my son.”
Adrian laughed.
“Biology disagrees.”
Margaret smiled through tears.
“Biology is not motherhood.”
Silence.
Even Ethan froze.
Margaret’s gaze softened.
She looked at Ethan.
“I failed you.”
Her voice cracked.
“I lied.”
“I manipulated.”
“I hurt people.”
“But loving you…”
She shook her head.
“That was never fake.”
Ethan stared.
Emotion crashed through his controlled mind.
Adrian snarled.
“How touching.”
He raised the remote.
“Enough.”
Margaret looked at the device.
Then—
Something changed in her eyes.
Recognition.
She had seen that model before.
Years ago.
Security division.
Manual override port.
Her pupils widened.
She whispered.
“Oh…”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
Margaret smiled.
A real smile.
Small.
Almost peaceful.
“You still use old hardware.”
Adrian’s expression shifted.
Too late.
Margaret lunged.
Everyone screamed.
She slammed her cuffed wrists into Adrian’s hand.
The remote flew.
Ethan moved instantly.
But Adrian was fast too.
Both lunged.
The remote bounced across the floor.
Toward Ava.
Toward shattered glass.
Toward the desk.
Ethan calculated.
Distance.
Speed.
Adrian’s reach.
0.8 seconds.
Not enough.
Unless—
Margaret grabbed Adrian.
Hard.
He snarled.
“Get off me!”
She held tighter.
“No.”
Adrian slammed his elbow into her ribs.
Crack.
She coughed blood.
Still holding.
Victor shouted.
“MARGARET!”
She looked at Ethan.
Tears.
Love.
Regret.
Peace.
And said the words Ethan would never forget.
“Run.”
Adrian realized.
“No—”
Margaret pulled him backward.
Straight toward the shattered window.
Adrian screamed.
“LET GO!”
She smiled.
“No.”
Then—
They fell.
Glass exploded outward.
Ava screamed.
Victor lunged.
Too late.
Margaret and Adrian vanished into the night.
Silence.
Dead silence.
Victor reached the broken window.
Looked down.
His face shattered.
“No…”
Thirty floors below—
Wreckage.
Broken glass.
Stillness.
Adrian lay unmoving.
Blood pooling beneath him.
Dead.
But Margaret—
Gone.
No body.
No trace.
Ethan stared.
His heartbeat pounded.
No.
No…
His eyes snapped to the remote.
Still blinking.
Still active.
Ava cried.
“Ethan!”
He grabbed it.
Screen flashing red.
FAILSAFE ARMED
Countdown:
00:01:57
Victor shouted.
“What does that mean?!”
Ethan scanned the interface.
His mind raced.
Encryption.
Biometric locks.
Failsafe loops.
His face changed.
Ava knew instantly.
It was bad.
Very bad.
“How long?”
Ethan looked up.
Expression pale.
“One minute fifty seconds.”
Lena sobbed.
“Can you stop it?”
Ethan’s fingers flew across the device.
Code layers opened.
Then stopped.
His breathing halted.
Ava whispered.
“What?”
Ethan slowly looked at her.
And for the first time since awakening—
True fear filled his eyes.
“It’s linked to my DNA.”
Silence.
Victor frowned.
“What?”
Ethan’s voice broke.
“Only E-7 can disarm it.”
Ava almost smiled in relief.
“Then do it!”
He didn’t move.
Ava’s smile disappeared.
“Ethan…?”
He whispered.
“There’s one more condition.”
Her heart stopped.
“What condition?”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
The screen flashed.
He read the final line.
And his voice shattered.
“To save you…”
He couldn’t breathe.
Ava screamed.
“Say it!”
Tears ran down his face.
He finally said it.
May you like
“I have to stop my own heart.”
