Chapter 4 - The Reckoning

By 4:00 AM, the Westwood mansion was quiet again.

The state police had collected the evidence, recorded the formal statements, and cleared the scene. The storm outside had passed, leaving behind a crisp, cool night sky filled with stars over the expanse of Lake Michigan.

In the grand drawing room, Margaret Westwood sat alone on the sofa, staring at a portrait of Claire that hung above the grand piano.

Her hair was unstyled, her expensive velvet gown ruined with damp spots from her tears. In a single night, her family had been torn apart: her youngest son was facing decades in state prison for conspiracy to commit murder, and the woman she had championed as her ideal daughter-in-law was a cold-blooded killer.

Adrian walked into the room, carrying two warm mugs of tea. He set one down on the table in front of his mother.

Margaret didn't touch the mug. She looked up at her eldest son, her eyes filled with immense shame and remorse.

"Adrian..." Margaret choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "I... I urged you to marry her. I told you to let go of Claire. I called you obsessed. I blamed you for holding onto a ghost..."

Adrian sat down in the chair across from her. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes evidence of three years of carried grief, but for the first time since Claire’s death, the tension in his shoulders had softened.

"You wanted the family to be whole again, Mother," Adrian said quietly. "You allowed yourself to be blinded by Madison because she gave you the illusion that everything was fine."

"I was cruel to you," Margaret wept, covering her face. "I was cruel to Natalie. And I called that brave little girl's mother a servant..."

"You did," Adrian agreed, refusing to sugarcoat the truth. "And that is something you will have to fix yourself."

He stood up, stepping toward the window overlooking the rose garden.

"Caleb will face the consequences of his actions," Adrian stated firmly. "I will hire the best legal team in the state to ensure Claire gets full justice, regardless of whose name is dragged through the press. The Westwood family name means nothing if it’s built on blood and lies."

Margaret nodded slowly, bowing her head in silent acceptance of her son's decree.

An hour later, Adrian walked down to the ground floor of the service wing.

In the comfortable, warm sitting room reserved for the resident staff, Rachel Bennett was sitting on a sofa, rocking a sleeping Emma in her arms. The child was wrapped in a soft knitted blanket, her stuffed rabbit tucked under her arm.

Adrian stepped inside softly, closing the door behind him.

Rachel immediately started to stand up, but Adrian held up a hand, motioning for her to stay seated.

He walked over and pulled up a wooden chair, sitting down across from the young mother.

"Mr. Westwood," Rachel said nervously. "I... I hope Emma didn't cause too much trouble tonight. I know how terrible this entire night has been for you."

Adrian looked at four-year-old Emma, reaching out a gentle hand to tuck a stray lock of dark hair behind the child’s ear.

"Rachel," Adrian said, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "Your daughter brought me the truth. She gave Claire her voice back after three years of silence. She saved me from spending the rest of my life married to the monster who killed my wife."

Tears glistened in Rachel’s eyes as she looked at her sleeping daughter.

"I am establishing an educational trust fund for Emma in the morning," Adrian continued calmly. "Full university tuition, healthcare, and a housing allowance that will ensure she never wants for anything for the rest of her life."

Rachel gasped, her hands trembling over her daughter's blanket. "Mr. Westwood, no... I can't accept that! I’m just doing my job—"

May you like

"It isn't a gift, Rachel," Adrian interrupted gently. "It is a debt of honor. And as for you, if you choose to stay, you will no longer be cleaning floors. The estate needs a head domestic director, and I want someone in this house whose integrity I can trust with my life."

Rachel wiped a tear from her cheek, looking at Adrian with deep gratitude. "Thank you, Mr. Westwood. Thank you."
