Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

By two o'clock in the morning, the atmosphere inside the Des Moines 911 Dispatch Center had quieted down, but Megan Collins remained at her desk long after her shift had officially ended. She had filled out her incident reporting paperwork, but she couldn't bring herself to log off and walk out to her car.

Her computer screen still displayed the active CAD incident log for 1408 Oakridge Drive.

Her desk phone rang. It was an internal transfer line from the Precinct 3 Detective Bureau.

Megan answered immediately. "Collins."

"Megan, it's Detective Reyes," came the voice over the line, tired but sharp. "I wanted to give you a direct update. Your handling of that call tonight was exemplary. If you hadn't picked up on the child's subtle phrasing, we would have cleared that house on a standard welfare check and walked right out the front door."

"How is Lucy?" Megan asked, her voice tight with genuine concern.

"She’s with Child Protective Services at the regional crisis center," Reyes replied. "A temporary protective order is in place. But Megan, this situation is escalating quickly. The documents we recovered from Vance’s residence indicate he wasn't running this alone. He has a primary partner—someone operating out of Omaha who manages the transport routes."

"Does the partner know Vance was arrested?"

"We tried to keep the scene quiet, but neighborhood onlookers posted footage of police cruisers on social media hours ago," Reyes said grimly. "The partner definitely knows. And according to the electronic logs we decrypted, Vance was holding high-value evidence on a physical server hidden somewhere outside his primary home."

Before Reyes could finish his sentence, the emergency dispatch system suddenly flashed bright red across all consoles in the dispatch room.

A secondary alarm sounded—a panic button trigger originating from the Polk County Child Safe House on Westridge Court.

Megan’s heart plummeted. "Detective... the safe house alarm just tripped."

"What?" Reyes demanded through the receiver.

"Westridge Court. That's where CPS took Lucy, isn't it?" Megan’s hands flew across her keyboard, dispatching every available unit in the district. "Silent panic alarm tripped at 02:14 AM. Perimeter sensors broken."

On the radio frequency, panic broke out. "All units, Unit 404 responding to 8820 Westridge Court. Intrusion alarm in progress. Suspect vehicle spotted fleeing the rear alleyway!"

Through the security feed patched directly into Megan’s console monitor, she watched terrifying black-and-white video footage from the safe house driveway. A dark SUV had backed through the perimeter gate. Two figures in dark tactical clothing were seen cutting the primary power line to the facility before making entry through the rear glass doors.

"They're after Lucy," Megan said out loud, her voice shaking with sudden adrenaline. "They aren't trying to escape—they're trying to retrieve the girl before she can speak to federal prosecutors!"

In the dark hallway of the safe house, emergency backup generators kicked in with a dull thud, plunging the corridors into eerie red emergency light.

Lucy sat huddled in the corner of a secure bedroom, holding her plush bunny against her chest, listening as heavy, aggressive footsteps echoed down the hallway toward her door.
