Chapter 4 - The San Diego InterludeTwo hundred miles south, in a luxury oceanfront apartment in San Diego, Savannah Reed was scrolling through her phone while sipping an artisanal iced latte.

The apartment—a three-bedroom penthouse overlooking La Jolla Cove—had been leased in her name using funds Adrian provided just three days ago. For months, Savannah had played her cards with calculated precision. She had flattered Adrian’s ego, played the damsel in distress, and convinced him that she was the true queen meant to sit beside him once he finally managed to "discard" his quiet, boring wife.
Her phone buzzed on the marble kitchen island.
An alert from a financial news app flashed across the screen: BREAKING: Whitmore Legacy Acquires Controlling Stake in Vale Industries; Adrian Vale Ousted as CEO Amid Corporate Restructuring.
Savannah blinked, staring at the headline. She tapped the notification, reading the details twice.
Controlling stake... Whitmore Legacy... Claire Vale.
Her breath caught in her throat.
She quickly opened her messaging app, pulling up her private chat with Adrian. The last message she sent him was He left, sent forty-five minutes before his world imploded. She dialed his number.
It rang once. Twice. Three times.
Then a recorded voice cut in: The subscriber you have dialed is not accepting calls at this time.
"What?" Savannah muttered, redialing.
Not accepting calls.
Panic, cold and sharp, began to pool in her stomach. She stood up from the barstool and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the sparkling Pacific. She had spent the last six months positioning herself as the future Mrs. Vale, living on the promise of a multi-million-dollar divorce settlement, a sprawling estate, and elite social standing in Southern California society.
If Adrian was broke—if Vale Industries had been seized by his wife’s family—then what was she?
A knock sounded at the penthouse door.
Savannah jumped, her heart skipping a beat. She hurried across the living room, pulling the door open, expecting to see Adrian standing there, desperate and frantic.
Instead, standing in the hallway were two men in dark charcoal suits holding thick leather briefcases. Behind them stood the building manager, looking thoroughly uncomfortable.
"Miss Savannah Reed?" the lead man asked, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.
"Yes?" Savannah clutched the edges of the door. "Who are you? What is this?"
The man flashed a leather-bound identification badge. "Marcus Vance, Special Investigator with Whitmore Trust & Legal Counsel. We are here to execute a formal asset recovery notice regarding lease agreements, luxury vehicle assignments, and personal property disbursements funded under corporate fraudulent conveyance statutes."
Savannah’s face drained of color. "Asset recovery? What are you talking about? This apartment lease is in my name! Adrian paid for it legally!"
Marcus stepped past her, pushing the door open without waiting for an invitation, followed closely by his associate.
"Mr. Adrian Vale utilized corporate accounts and unauthorized personal lines of credit tied to Whitmore-controlled subsidiaries to fund your living expenses, vehicle purchases, and jewelry acquisitions over the past six months," Marcus said calmly, walking into the living room and placing a document on the glass coffee table. "Under California civil code and federal asset seizure guidelines, all gifts, property leases, and financial transfers made during the pendency of corporate insolvency are subject to immediate recovery."
"You can't do that!" Savannah shrieked, her voice rising in panic. "I am pregnant! I am carrying Adrian's child!"
Marcus paused, turning slowly to look at her. A faint, knowing smile touched the corner of his mouth.
"Miss Reed," Marcus said smoothly, "our investigative team conducted a thorough financial and medical audit of your background yesterday afternoon. The fertility clinic in La Jolla where you claimed to receive your prenatal care has confirmed in a signed affidavit that no such medical record exists under your name. Furthermore, your close friends have already provided text message logs—secured via lawful subpoena—confirming that the 'pregnancy' was a fabricated leverage strategy designed to accelerate Mr. Vale's divorce proceedings."
Savannah staggered back, her knees hitting the sofa cushions. She collapsed onto the couch, her carefully constructed facade shattering into a million pieces.
"That's... that's a lie," she whispered, her voice trembling. "He believed me... he loved me..."
"Mr. Vale was simply a very convenient vehicle for your ambitions," Marcus replied coldly. "Just as you were a very convenient distraction for him. Unfortunately for both of you, Mrs. Claire Vale is not a woman who leaves loose ends."
May you like
Marcus gestured to his associate. "The movers will arrive at 2:00 PM to inventory all personal property purchased with corporate funds. You have two hours to pack your personal clothing and vacate the premises. The locks will be changed at sunset."
Without another word, the two investigators turned and walked out of the penthouse, leaving Savannah alone in the silent, expensive apartment as the reality of her total, absolute ruin finally settled over her.
