Chapter 10: The Federal Investigators Take Charge

Marcus Vance stepped smoothly across the threshold, shaking the rainwater from his dark umbrella before leaning it neatly against the interior wall of the bright hallway. His tailored charcoal suit and sharp analytical eyes established an immediate sense of official authority. Behind him stood two junior investigators carrying secure digital data-capture kits and evidence binders, ready to execute the mandate Julian had requested over the phone.
“Julian,” Marcus greeted quietly, offering a firm, sympathetic handshake. “Thank you for doing the right thing. I know how difficult this must be for you and the kids.”
“It was the only choice left, Marcus,” Julian replied, his voice steady despite the emotional exhaustion weighing heavily on his shoulders. “The digital files are still loaded on the workstation in the home office. My personal access credentials were used, but the transfer logs and local backups clearly show the origin points and administrative overrides.”
Marcus nodded grimly, gesturing for his team to move down the hallway toward the study. “We’ll secure the hardware immediately. Every file, cache, and audit trail will be preserved according to federal protocol.”
As the investigators moved into the minimalist home office, Elena stood up slowly from the leather armchair. She smoothed the front of her beige pantsuit with mechanical precision, attempting to project a shred of her former dignity as Marcus stepped into the room to address her directly.
“Elena Vance,” Marcus said professionally, holding up his identification badge before sliding it back into his jacket pocket. “You are being detained pending a full forensic audit and formal charges of corporate fraud, identity manipulation, and systematic embezzlement. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
Elena didn't resist. She kept her chin held high, though her eyes betrayed a profound, hollow defeat. “I understand,” she murmured, her voice stripped of its previous authority. She offered one final, lingering glance toward the living room where Lily sat quietly with her pink spiral notebook safely clutched to her chest, before turning around and placing her wrists voluntarily before the investigators.
Julian watched from the doorway, holding the sleeping baby securely in one arm. A strange sense of closure settled over him as he realized the deception that had poisoned their household was finally being excised. It was a painful, devastating process, but it was entirely necessary for any genuine healing to begin.

The junior investigators moved efficiently, packing the dual-monitor workstation into padded transport cases while securing the physical paperwork scattered across the desk. Within twenty minutes, the process was complete, and Elena was escorted out of the modern home and into the back of the waiting federal sedan, disappearing into the gray, rainy afternoon.
