Chapter 14 - The Winter Solstice

The winter solstice brought the longest night of the year, but inside my home, it felt brighter than it had in decades.
I had invited a small group over for a quiet, intimate dinner: Aunt Clara, Richard Sterling, and Daniel.
At first, I had worried that the tension between Richard and Daniel might be too thick to cut with a knife, given that Richard was the billionaire who had dismantled Daniel's marriage and frozen his ex-wife's trust fund. But as it turned out, humility is a great equalizer.
When Richard arrived, he walked straight up to Daniel, extended his hand, and said, "It's good to see you standing on your own two feet, son. Hard work builds character, doesn't it?"
Daniel had shaken his hand firmly, meeting Richard’s gaze without flinching. "Yes, sir. It certainly does."
We sat around the dining table eating a simple, hearty roast dinner prepared by my own hands, sharing stories, laughing at old memories, and enjoying each other's company without any pretense, luxury posturing, or forced expectations. There were no imported two-thousand-dollar champagnes, no custom-engraved crystal gifts, and no sprawling guest lists. Just family, true friends, and quiet peace.
After dinner, while Clara and Daniel were washing dishes in the kitchen, Richard walked over to the bay window where I stood watching the snow drift down softly through the streetlight.
He wrapped a warm cashmere scarf gently around my shoulders, stepping close behind me.
"Merry Christmas, Margaret," he murmured, resting his chin lightly against my hair.

I leaned back into his warm embrace, looking out at the snow-covered hills stretching toward the horizon where my ancestral land waited quietly in the dark.
"Merry Christmas, Richard," I whispered, smiling as the clock ticked softly toward a brand-new year.
