Chapter 1: The Truth Hidden for Years

Chapter 1: The Truth Hidden for Years

Silence swallowed the grand hall.

The final piano note faded into the air as everyone stared at the little girl.

The man in the tuxedo stepped backward as if the ground had disappeared beneath him.

"What... what did you say?" he whispered.

The girl wiped her tears with trembling fingers.

"My mother told me that if I ever found the man who knew this song, he was my father."

The audience watched in stunned silence.

The man's face had turned pale.

His name was Daniel Hartwell, one of the wealthiest men in the city. For years he had carried the grief of losing his wife, Sophia, during a terrible accident shortly after she disappeared from his life.

He had believed she died alone.

He had never known she was pregnant.

"That's impossible," he said, though his voice lacked conviction.

The girl reached into the small bag hanging from her wheelchair and pulled out a worn envelope.

"My mother left this for me."

Daniel's hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A younger Daniel stood beside Sophia, both smiling beneath a summer sky.

On the back, written in Sophia's handwriting, were the words:

"If anything happens to me, find Daniel. Tell him our daughter never stopped loving him."

Daniel felt his knees weaken.

The room blurred.

For eleven years, he had searched for answers about Sophia's disappearance.

And now those answers sat before him in a wheelchair.

His daughter.

The daughter he never knew existed.

Without caring who was watching, Daniel fell to his knees in front of her.

"What is your name?" he asked softly.

"Emily."

Tears streamed down his face.

"Emily," he whispered. "I'm so sorry."
