Chapter 18 - WHAT MY MOTHER FINALLY ADMITTED

Seven months after Noah was born, Mom requested one meeting.

Not at our home.

Not alone.

With both attorneys present.

Anna did not attend.

That was her choice.

I respected it.

Claire came with me.

Mom looked different when she entered the conference room.

Smaller.

Quieter.

She sat across from us.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she looked at me.

"I was jealous of Anna."

I had expected excuses.

The directness surprised me.

Mom continued.

"When you married her, I told myself I was losing you."

She folded her hands.

"When she became pregnant, I became convinced I would become irrelevant."

Claire stared at her.

"So you tried to destroy his marriage?"

Mom closed her eyes.

"Yes."

The word landed harder than any denial could have.

She admitted creating messages from my account.

She admitted opening my mail.

She admitted threatening Anna.

She admitted forging the guardianship form.

She admitted entering our house after being told not to.

Then she admitted the hardest part.

"I knew she was afraid of me."

My jaw tightened.

"And you kept going."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"Because fear made me feel powerful."

No one spoke.

Mom looked at me.

"Your father told me once that I didn't know the difference between being needed and being loved."

She wiped her cheek.

"I hated him for saying it."

I thought of Dad's recording.

"Was he right?"

"Yes."

That did not heal anything.

But it ended one lie.

Mom did not ask to see Noah.

She did not ask me to convince Anna.

She did not ask to come home.

She only said, "I am sorry."

I looked at her.

"I believe you're sorry."

Hope appeared in her face.

I continued.

"But that doesn't mean things go back to normal."

The hope changed.

Then she nodded.

"I understand."

"I love you."

Her lips trembled.

"I love you too."

"But my first responsibility is to the family I built."

Mom nodded again.

This time, she did not argue.

When Claire and I walked outside, I expected to feel victorious.

I didn't.

I felt sad.

Some endings are like that.

You can make the right decision and still grieve what it costs.

Claire squeezed my shoulder.

"Dad would be proud of you."

I looked toward the sky.

"I wish he'd done it sooner."

"So did he."

We walked toward the car.

For the first time in my life, I understood my father completely.

And I promised myself Noah would never need thirty-six years to understand me.
