Chapter 3 - The Woman They Tried to Bury

Caleb Whitaker stared at the message on his phone for almost ten seconds.

He didn't blink.

He didn't breathe.

He simply stared.

Your wife has been found alive.

Those five words destroyed the perfect future he had already imagined.

Because in Caleb's mind, everything was finished.

Emily was supposed to disappear.

The accident was supposed to look like a tragedy.

A terrible highway incident.

A pregnant woman losing control of her life.

A story nobody would question.

That was the beauty of his plan.

There would be no divorce.

No public scandal.

No messy court battle.

No wife standing across from him exposing every lie.

Emily would simply be gone.

And Caleb would finally be free.

But now...

She was alive.

Vanessa noticed the change in his expression.

"What happened?"

Caleb didn't answer.

"Caleb."

Her voice became sharper.

"What happened?"

He slowly turned the phone toward her.

She read the message.

Her confidence disappeared instantly.

"No."

Caleb watched her face change.

The same woman who had smiled while Emily lay bleeding on the highway was suddenly afraid.

"She's alive?" Vanessa whispered.

Caleb tightened his jaw.

"Apparently."

For the first time since they started their plan, neither of them had an answer.

Because they had prepared for everything.

Except failure.

At Mercy General Hospital, I woke up to the sound of my baby's heartbeat.

That sound was stronger than any words.

Stronger than any apology Caleb could ever give.

A nurse stood beside me, checking the monitor.

"You're awake."

I slowly opened my eyes.

"How long was I out?"

"About an hour."

My hand immediately went to my stomach.

"The baby?"

The nurse smiled.

"Still fighting."

I closed my eyes.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Not from sadness.

From relief.

Because for the first time in hours, I felt something other than pain.

Hope.

Then I remembered.

Caleb.

Vanessa.

The highway.

Everything came rushing back.

I sat up too quickly.

The nurse gently pushed me down.

"Careful."

"Where is he?"

"Who?"

"My husband."

Her expression softened.

"The police are handling it."

I looked at her.

"Did they find him?"

"Not yet."

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I knew Caleb.

He always believed he was smarter than everyone else.

He would run.

He would hide.

He would manipulate.

But he would never understand one thing.

People like Caleb always made the same mistake.

They believed their victims were weak because they were kind.

They confused kindness with helplessness.

And that mistake would destroy him.

Two hours later, Detective Aaron Mitchell walked into my hospital room.

He was in his early forties.

Tired eyes.

Serious expression.

The kind of person who had seen too many people hurt by those they trusted.

"Mrs. Whitaker?"

I looked at him.

"Emily is fine."

He nodded.

"Emily."

A small respect appeared in his voice.

"I need to ask you some questions."

"Go ahead."

He opened his notebook.

"Can you describe exactly what happened?"

I looked down at my hands.

The cuts were covered with white bandages.

"I was driving with my husband."

"Where were you going?"

"Caleb said we needed to discuss something."

The detective wrote it down.

"Did you argue?"

"No."

"Did he threaten you?"

I paused.

That question was harder.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

"No."

The detective looked up.

"Then why do you believe he pushed you?"

I met his eyes.

"Because he wanted me gone."

Silence.

Then I continued.

"For months, he changed."

"How?"

"He stopped acting like my husband."

I swallowed.

"He stopped asking how I was feeling. He stopped caring about the baby. He started staying late at work. He started hiding his phone."

The detective nodded.

"Who is Vanessa Crane?"

My entire body became tense.

"The woman he was with."

"Your husband's affair partner?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Six months."

The detective wrote something down.

"Did you confront him?"

"Several times."

"And?"

"He denied it."

A bitter smile crossed my face.

"He told me I was imagining things."

The detective closed his notebook.

"Mrs. Whitaker, there's something you should know."

I waited.

"The highway cameras captured the vehicle."

My heart beat faster.

"Did they capture what happened?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Because hearing someone say it was different from knowing it.

There would be proof.

Not my word against his.

Not his charm against my pain.

Proof.

"What happens now?"

Detective Mitchell looked serious.

"Now we find him."

But Caleb wasn't waiting to be found.

He was already trying to rewrite the story.

By evening, his attorney had contacted the police.

His statement was carefully prepared.

A story built from lies.

According to Caleb:

Emily had become unstable during pregnancy.

She had emotional issues.

She had opened the car door herself.

She had fallen accidentally.

He claimed he was "devastated."

He claimed he "loved his wife."

He claimed he wanted answers.

It was exactly what Caleb always did.

He controlled the narrative.

He performed innocence.

He made himself the victim.

And for years, people believed him because he was good at it.

But this time was different.

Because he forgot one important detail.

I knew him.

Better than anyone.

I knew every lie he told before he even spoke.

And I knew the one thing he feared more than losing money.

Losing control.

The next morning, Detective Mitchell returned.

This time, he wasn't alone.

He carried a folder.

"We found something."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He placed several photographs on the table.

The first was the Mercedes.

The second was the highway.

The third was a screenshot from a security camera.

Caleb and Vanessa.

Together.

Planning.

My eyes narrowed.

"Where did you get this?"

"Private security footage from a restaurant."

I stared.

"What restaurant?"

"The same place your husband told you he was working late for the past three months."

My stomach twisted.

"So he wasn't working."

"No."

The detective opened the folder.

"He was meeting Vanessa."

Then he placed another document down.

"There's more."

I looked at it.

A financial record.

A transfer.

My blood ran cold.

"What's this?"

"Your husband moved money."

"How much?"

The detective hesitated.

"Over two million dollars."

I looked at him.

"From where?"

He answered quietly.

"From an account connected to your family trust."

For a moment...

Everything stopped.

Because that was impossible.

Caleb didn't know.

He couldn't know.

Unless...

My face changed.

The detective noticed.

"Emily?"

I slowly looked at him.

"He knew."

"Knew what?"

I stared at the documents.

"My real identity."

The room became silent.

For years, I believed Caleb didn't know who I was.

But now I understood.

He had known.

Maybe not from the beginning.

Maybe not when we first met.

But at some point...

He discovered everything.

My family.

My inheritance.

My power.

And instead of loving me...

He started planning how to take everything.

Detective Mitchell leaned forward.

"Who exactly are you, Emily?"

I looked out the hospital window.

For years, I had hidden from the Laurent name.

I wanted a normal life.

A quiet life.

A life where people saw me.

Not my money.

But Caleb had forced me back into that world.

I turned toward the detective.

"My full name is Emily Laurent Whitaker."

His expression changed.

"Laurent?"

I nodded.

"My father founded Laurent Global Holdings."

The detective went silent.

Then he whispered:

"Caleb didn't just try to kill his wife."

I looked at him.

"He tried to destroy an empire."

I looked down at my unborn child.

And for the first time since the highway...

I smiled.

Because Caleb thought he had erased a woman.

May you like

He didn't realize...

He had awakened someone who had spent her entire life learning how to fight.
