Chapter 23 - The Unbroken CircleLater that night, after everyone had gone to sleep, I sat alone on the dock under a blanket of stars.

The water lapped gently against the wooden pilings, a rhythmic, soothing sound that washed away the lingering stress of the past week.

I pulled Dad’s final letter out of my jacket pocket for the hundredth time. The paper was worn at the creases, soft from years of folding and unfolding.

I read his words again, not with the anger of a wounded daughter, but with the quiet understanding of an adult who finally recognized the heavy burden of generational trauma.

He had spent his whole life building walls to protect a fragile legacy, never realizing that the walls themselves were what kept him prisoner.

We had torn those walls down. Brick by brick. Secret by secret.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It wasn't a news alert or an extortion threat. It was a simple text message from Sienna:

“Are you coming inside soon? It’s getting cold out there.”

I smiled, typing back a quick reply:

“In a minute.”

I slipped the letter back into my pocket, knowing I wouldn't need to read it again. The past no longer held power over me. It was simply history—a story we had survived, rewritten, and finally put to rest.

The lake stretched out endlessly into the dark horizon, silent and deep.

For the first time in my life, looking out into the unknown didn't feel terrifying. It felt like an open page.
