CHAPTER 2 — The Truth They Buried

The surgery lasted nine hours.
When I opened my eyes, the first face I saw wasn't my mother's.
It was Julia's.
She smiled through tears.
"You made it."
Recovery was slow.
Painful.
But every day I became stronger.
Then, one rainy afternoon, Julia arrived carrying an old storage box.
"I found these while reviewing your grandmother's estate."
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
Bank statements.
And a leather journal belonging to my late grandmother, Eleanor.
One sentence stopped my breathing.
If Claire ever learns the truth, she'll finally understand why Diane hated her.
Page after page revealed secrets no one had ever told me.
When I was eight years old, my grandmother had established a trust for my education and medical care.
It couldn't be touched by anyone except me.
My parents had spent years trying to convince Eleanor to rewrite her will.
She refused.
After her death, they discovered the trust was protected by an independent law firm.
They couldn't steal it.
So they tried something else.
Control me.
Convince me I was selfish.
Make me believe I owed everything to Brandon.
The journal ended with one heartbreaking sentence.
I fear they will never love Claire because loving her reminds them of everything they've failed to become.
I cried harder than I had after my cancer diagnosis.
Not because I'd lost my family.
Because I finally understood...
Their cruelty had never been my fault.
Months later, Brandon appeared outside my apartment.
He looked thinner.
Older.
Broken.
"I lost everything."
I remained silent.
"I'm in rehab now."
Still silent.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
He lowered his eyes.
"I just wanted to tell you..."
"You were never the reason our family fell apart."
"I was."
He walked away without asking for money.
May you like
Without asking for another chance.
Sometimes accountability begins with walking away empty-handed.
