Chapter 6 - THE FAMILY BUSINESS
The meeting took place at Vance Medical’s headquarters in Tysons.
Laura attended with Dana, Priya, and an attorney representing her in the financial investigation. Chloe sat with separate counsel. Julian and Evelyn occupied the opposite side of the conference table.
Neither looked at the other.
The independent board committee began with the warehouse losses. Vance Medical had concealed $5.1 million in cleanup costs and contract penalties. Capital Clinical recycled company money to inflate quarterly cash figures and prevent the lender from calling its loan.
Julian authorized the transactions.
Evelyn designed the cover story.
Chloe executed parts of it.
Laura’s identity was used to make the records look independently reviewed.
Maya’s account served as a temporary pass-through because Evelyn believed regulators would view transfers to a child as family investments rather than vendor fraud.
Julian interrupted.
“Nothing was taken for personal luxury. Every dollar went back into the company.”
Priya displayed transfers showing otherwise.
Evelyn’s personal legal bills, Julian’s divorce retainer, and Chloe’s diamond bracelet had been paid through entities connected to Capital Clinical.
Julian looked at Chloe. “You accepted that bracelet.”
“Yes,” she said.
“You created the account.”
“Using documents your mother gave me and instructions you approved.”
“You could’ve refused.”
Chloe’s voice shook. “So could you.”
Evelyn finally spoke.
“This company supports hundreds of families. Laura was willing to destroy it because she needed to be right.”
Laura looked at the woman who had documented her worst days and taught Maya to lie.
“I was willing to report what you did.”
“You were an outsider who married into something you didn’t understand.”
“I understood the numbers.”
“That was always the problem.”
The emotional meaning of the betrayal became clear.
Evelyn feared losing the company more than she feared harming her family. Julian feared disappointing Evelyn and becoming the man who allowed the Vance name to collapse. He turned Laura into an enemy because admitting she was right would force him to confront his mother and his own crimes.
Laura had her own failure to name.
“I should have reported the fraud sooner,” she said. “I kept gathering proof because I thought perfect evidence would protect Maya and me. While I waited, you coached her.”
Julian leaned forward.
“You think you’re the only parent who made a mistake?”
“No. I think some mistakes require consequences.”
The committee presented server logs, bank confirmations, the verified phone recordings, and Chloe’s original invoice records. The evidence came from independent sources. No single child’s video carried the case.
Julian’s attorney requested a private recess.
Evelyn refused.
She demanded the board dismiss Julian and let her negotiate with the lender personally.
Julian stared at her.
“You told me we were protecting the family.”
“We were protecting the company.”
“You used Maya’s account.”
“You approved it.”
The alliance between mother and son ended without shouting. Each had reached the point where survival required blaming the other.
The board removed Evelyn as chair and terminated Julian for cause. Chloe was dismissed but offered cooperation protections while investigators reviewed her role.
Vance Medical notified employees that it would restructure, sell the Maryland warehouse, and suspend executive distributions. Layoffs remained possible, but payroll was protected for the next ninety days.
No one was arrested in the conference room.
As the meeting ended, a process server delivered subpoenas for company records and formal notices connected to the federal inquiry.
Julian stood in the hallway with the papers in his hand.
Laura walked past him.
“Did Maya ask about me?” he said.
“Yes.”
“What did you tell her?”
“That you’re still her father.”
Hope flickered across his face.
Laura continued.
“And that being her father doesn’t make you safe.”
The hope disappeared.

On Tuesday, the family court received the verified recordings, the guardian ad litem’s report, and evidence that Julian had used custody proceedings to pressure Laura over the audit.
The final custody hearing could no longer remain separate from the truth.
