CHAPTER 2 — THE FOOTAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The hospital hallway was silent.
Too silent.
Daniel had always hated silence.
Silence meant waiting.
It meant uncertainty.
It meant there were questions no one wanted to answer.
And tonight, there were too many questions.
He sat outside the emergency room, his hands locked together, staring at the floor while the same image kept replaying in his mind.
Emma lying on the hardwood floor.
His wife.
Eight months pregnant.
Carrying their twins.
And Vanessa standing over her.
For years, Daniel had believed he understood his family.
He believed he knew who he could trust.
His sister had always been difficult. She was impulsive, dramatic, and sometimes selfish.
But violent?
Cruel?
Capable of hurting an innocent woman carrying his children?
That was impossible.
At least, that was what he wanted to believe.
The doctor finally stepped through the doors.
Daniel stood immediately.
“How is she?”
The doctor removed his glasses and looked at him seriously.
“Your wife and the babies are stable.”
Daniel exhaled for the first time in minutes.
“But there are complications.”
His expression changed.
“What kind of complications?”
“Her body experienced severe stress. We need to monitor her closely. The next twenty-four hours are critical.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Twenty-four hours.
That was all he could think about.
Twenty-four hours where he could lose everything.
His wife.
His children.
His future.
Then the doctor added quietly:
“Mr. Carter… your wife kept asking one question.”
Daniel looked up.
“What question?”
“She kept asking if the babies were okay.”
His jaw tightened.
Even after everything.
Even after being attacked.
Emma’s first concern was not herself.
It was their children.
That was Emma.
And suddenly, Daniel felt something break inside him.
Because while his wife was fighting to protect their family…
His own sister was trying to destroy it.
Two hours later, Daniel returned home.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he needed answers.
The mansion felt different.
Cold.
Empty.
The same hallway where his wife had collapsed now looked like a crime scene.
The broken camera was still on the floor.
Vanessa had already left.
She had sent him dozens of messages.
Daniel, I’m sorry this happened.
Daniel, I know Emma is trying to turn you against me.
Daniel, please believe your own sister.
He ignored every one.
He walked into his office and closed the door.
The room where he made millions of decisions.
The room where he built his company.
The room where he trusted the people closest to him.
He opened his laptop.
A notification appeared.
SECURITY BACKUP COMPLETE.
Daniel froze.
His eyes narrowed.
The hallway camera.
The one Vanessa destroyed.
A backup?
He clicked the file.
A password screen appeared.
For a moment, he hesitated.
Then he entered the security code.
The video loaded.
The timestamp appeared.
8:42 PM.
Daniel watched.
At first, he hoped Vanessa was right.
He hoped there was another explanation.
Maybe Emma misunderstood.
Maybe emotions got out of control.
Maybe something happened that he didn’t know about.
But within seconds…
That hope disappeared.
The video showed Vanessa entering the house.
Calm.
Confident.
No fear.
No panic.
Then came the conversation.
The demand for the trust code.
The threats.
The attack.
Daniel’s face became completely expressionless.
That was when he became dangerous.
Daniel was not a man who exploded when angry.
He became quiet.
Focused.
Cold.
He watched as Vanessa punched Emma.
He watched his wife fall.
He watched Vanessa refuse to call for help.
And when Vanessa grabbed Emma’s hair and dragged her across the floor…
Daniel stopped the video.
His hand tightened around the edge of the desk.
A million thoughts raced through his mind.
But one thought was louder than all the others.
She could have killed my children.
He restarted the video.
This time, he watched every second.
He noticed things he missed before.
Vanessa kept looking toward the hallway camera.
She knew exactly where it was.
She knew she was being recorded.
Which meant one terrifying possibility:
She had planned this.
Daniel continued watching.
Then something happened that made his blood run cold.
After attacking Emma, Vanessa walked into his office.
Not Emma’s.
His.
She opened his locked drawer.
The drawer where he kept sensitive financial documents.
Daniel leaned closer.
The video showed Vanessa removing a folder.
A folder he had never seen before.
Inside were documents.
Contracts.
Bank statements.
Account transfers.
Daniel immediately recognized the company logo.
His company.
Voss International Holdings.
His company.
His money.
His name.
But the account numbers were unfamiliar.
He paused the video.
Then zoomed in.
His breathing slowed.
Because the account was not registered under Vanessa’s name.
It was registered under a shell company.
A company created six months earlier.
A company connected to someone he trusted.
Someone inside his empire.
Daniel picked up his phone.
He called his chief financial officer, Michael.
The call connected immediately.
“Daniel?”
“Michael, I need you to answer something.”
A pause.
“What happened?”
“Have you ever seen a company called Blackridge Consulting?”
Silence.
A long silence.
And that silence told Daniel everything.
“Michael?”
Finally, his CFO spoke.
“Where did you hear that name?”
Daniel stood.
“Why?”
“Because that company was flagged during an internal audit.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Why wasn’t I informed?”
Another pause.
Then Michael answered:
“Because someone removed the report before it reached you.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
Someone had been hiding things from him.
Someone close.
Daniel looked back at the frozen image of Vanessa stealing the documents.
This was no longer just about an attack.
This was bigger.
Much bigger.
“Michael.”
“Yes?”
“I want every financial record connected to Blackridge.”
“Daniel, are you sure?”
His voice became calm.
Too calm.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And Michael?”
“Yes?”
“Do not tell anyone I asked.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at the screen.
At the woman who had almost destroyed his family.
“Because whoever is behind this already knows how to manipulate the truth.”
He closed the laptop.
For the first time in years, Daniel realized something terrifying.
The enemy was not outside his company.
The enemy was inside.
And Vanessa was only one piece of the puzzle.
The next morning, Emma woke up in the hospital.
The first thing she saw was Daniel sitting beside her bed.
His eyes were red.
Not from anger.
From guilt.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Emma looked at him weakly.
“For what?”
Daniel reached for her hand.
“For not seeing it sooner.”
She studied his face.
“What did you find?”
Daniel hesitated.
Because he knew the truth would change everything.
“Emma…”
“Yes?”
“Vanessa didn’t come here only for the trust fund.”
Emma’s expression changed.
“Then why?”
Daniel looked toward the hospital window.
Outside, the city continued moving like nothing had happened.
But their world had already changed.
“She was trying to cover up something.”
“What?”
Daniel looked back at his wife.
“Something that has been happening inside my company.”
Emma swallowed.
“How bad?”
Daniel’s silence answered before his words did.
“Bad enough that someone was willing to hurt our children to hide it.”
And at that moment, both of them understood.
The attack was not the beginning.
It was the first clue.
Because somewhere inside Daniel’s empire…
Someone had been stealing.
May you like
Someone had been lying.
And someone was terrified that Daniel was finally starting to look in the right direction.
