Three days later Clara remained in the hospital.
Doctors managed to stop the early contractions.
The baby was safe.
Governor Sterling refused to leave her room.
One quiet evening he spoke first.
"I failed you."
Clara looked up.
"You didn't."
"I let you walk away because I wanted you to find happiness."
He sighed heavily.
"But I should have looked closer."
She reached for his hand.
"I never told Mark who you were."
"I know."
"I wanted someone to love Clara..."
"...not Governor Sterling's daughter."
Her father smiled sadly.
"You inherited your mother's stubborn heart."
They both laughed softly.
