Part 3

A tense, heavy silence filled the apartment for several seconds.
Then, I heard the muffled sound of a cell phone vibrating in the living room.
It was followed immediately by another ringtone.
Both Carmen and Javier were receiving notifications at the exact same time.
"What is this?" Carmen muttered, her voice laced with growing confusion.
"Mom..." Javier’s voice suddenly sounded completely terrified. "The bank... our corporate accounts have been frozen. It says there is an active investigation into fraud and money laundering."
"What?" Carmen gasped. "That’s impossible! Who did this?"
"I did," Alexander said, his voice smooth and completely devoid of emotion.
"I spent the last twelve hours speaking with the board of directors at your primary lending bank."
"When I showed them the evidence of your company’s massive debt hidden behind falsified assets, they were more than happy to protect their own interests."
"Your loans have been called in, Carmen. You have twenty-four hours to pay back four million dollars."
"You... you can't do this!" Carmen shrieked, her composed facade completely shattering. "This is illegal! I will sue you!"
"With what money?" Alexander asked quietly.
"Your businesses are being shut down as we speak."
"But that is just the beginning."
"Javier," Alexander continued, turning his attention to the trembling young man. "I also took the liberty of contacting the senior partners at your investment firm."
"I sent them a copy of the security footage from the hotel last night."
"The footage where you stood outside the door while your mother beat your wife."
"The partners were quite clear. They do not want a man who facilitates domestic abuse and extortion representing their clients."
"You were fired exactly twenty minutes ago, Javier."
Through the bedroom door, I could hear Javier literally begging.
"Please, Mr. Vance... please don't do this. It was my mother's idea! She forced me to go along with it! She said we needed the condo to save the family!"
"Javier, shut up!" Carmen screamed at her son.
The betrayal was instant.
The perfect, united front they had presented at the wedding had collapsed in less than five minutes.
They were turning on each other like wild animals trapped in a cage.
"You think you've won, Alexander?" Carmen snarled, her voice shaking with pure rage.
"You think you can destroy me with a few financial tricks?"
"We are legally family now. Sofia belongs to our household. I will drag her name through every tabloid in the country before I let you ruin me!"
"I was waiting for you to say that," Alexander replied, his voice entirely unbothered.
"You see, Carmen, I didn't just contact the banks and Javier's employers."
"I also contacted the District Attorney."
"And unlike you, I don't just have 'friends' in high places. I have ironclad evidence."
The sound of heavy footsteps echoed from the hallway outside my apartment.
Before Carmen could say another word, the front door was pushed open completely.
I heard the firm, authoritative voices of police officers entering the room.
"Carmen Vance? Javier Vance?" a detective called out.
"You are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit extortion, aggravated assault, and unlawful confinement."
"What? No! Get your hands off me!" Carmen screamed as the metallic sound of handcuffs clicking shut echoed through the apartment.
"This is a mistake! Do you know who I am?"
"We know exactly who you are," the detective replied coldly.
"Javier was crying now, his pathetic whimpers filling the hallway."
"It wasn't me! I didn't touch her! I swear I didn't touch her!" he wept.
"You watched," the detective told him. "Under the law, you are just as guilty."
I gently let go of Sofia’s hand and stepped out of the bedroom, wanting to see this moment with my own eyes.
When I walked into the living room, Carmen was being led out in handcuffs, her hair messy, her face red with fury.
She caught sight of me and spat in my direction.
"You and your pathetic daughter will pay for this!" she yelled.
I didn't say a word. I just stood next to Alexander, watching her get dragged down the hallway.
Javier looked at me with begging eyes as they led him away, but I turned my back on him.
The apartment finally grew quiet again.
The detective looked at Alexander and nodded.
"We have the other three women who were in the hotel room in custody as well, Mr. Vance. They confessed the moment we showed them the security tape."
"Thank you, Detective," Alexander said, shaking his hand.
The door closed, leaving just the two of us in the living room.
The monster had been dragged away, but the healing process was only just beginning.
The next few days passed in a blur of legal proceedings and medical checkups.
The news of Carmen and Javier's arrest exploded across the city's social and business circles.
The headlines were brutal.
"Prominent Businesswoman and Son Arrested for Extortion and Abuse of New Bride."
The public outrage was immediate.
Carmen's remaining business partners scrambled to cut ties with her, completely destroying what was left of her reputation.
Sofia stayed at my apartment, slowly regaining her strength.
The physical swelling on her face began to go down, replaced by a quiet, fierce determination.
She was no longer the frightened girl who had collapsed into my arms.
One afternoon, Alexander came over with a stack of legal documents.
He sat down on the couch next to Sofia, placing the papers on the coffee table.
"These are the annulment papers," he said gently.
"Because the marriage was entered under extreme duress and criminal activity, the judge has fast-tracked the process."
"By tomorrow morning, you will legally no longer be married to Javier."
"It will be as if it never happened."
Sofia looked at the papers, a single tear escaping her eye, but she quickly wiped it away.
"Thank you, Dad," she whispered. "For everything."
"You don't need to thank me, Sofia," Alexander said, his voice cracking slightly with emotion.
"I should have protected you from them from the very beginning. I should have seen through them."
"We both should have," I added, sitting on her other side and wrapping my arms around her.
"But they are going to pay for what they did. Every single day for the rest of their lives."
Alexander nodded grimly.
"The District Attorney is refusing any plea deals," he explained.
"With the evidence we provided, Carmen is looking at a minimum of ten years in a maximum-security prison."
"Javier is looking at five to seven for his role as an accomplice."
"Their assets are being liquidated to pay off their debts, and whatever is left will be seized as part of the civil lawsuit I filed on Sofia's behalf."
"They will leave prison with absolutely nothing."
Sofia looked up, a sense of peace finally washing over her face.
"I want to go see him," she said suddenly.
Alexander and I exchanged worried glances.
"Sofia, I don't think that's a good idea," I said gently. "You need to rest."
May you like
"No, Mom," Sofia said, her voice firmer than I had heard it in months.
"I need to look Javier in the eye one last time. I need him to know that he didn't break me."
