CHAPTER 8 — THE HOSPITAL VISITOR

The life insurance policy changed everything.

Until that moment, Ethan had believed Cassandra’s plan centered on Sophie’s inheritance.

Now the truth was darker.

Cassandra intended to gain control of Sophie, send her out of the country, and collect twenty-five million dollars after Ethan’s death.

Detective Ortiz remained at the lake house while her team photographed every room and secured hundreds of documents.

“Do not leave the hospital,” she told Ethan over the phone. “An officer will remain outside Sophie’s room.”

“Do you think Cassandra will come here?”

“She has lost control of the plan. That makes her dangerous.”

Ethan looked through the glass wall of Sophie’s room.

His daughter had finally fallen asleep again.

“What about Addison?”

“She’s being transported to a children’s hospital. Her mother has been notified.”

“Did Addison say who took her?”

“She is barely speaking. We’ll move slowly.”

Olivia closed her laptop.

“We also need to freeze every account connected to the trust.”

“Can Cassandra touch the money?”

“Not legally. But she has already shown that legal barriers do not stop her.”

Daniel walked toward the vending machines to get coffee.

Ethan remained near Sophie’s bed, listening to the steady rhythm of the heart monitor.

He could not stop thinking about every moment he had ignored.

Cassandra criticizing Sophie’s clothes.

Cassandra insisting she should attend a stricter school.

Cassandra complaining that Ethan’s grief for Laura prevented him from building a “real future.”

He had mistaken jealousy for insecurity.

He had mistaken manipulation for concern.

And Sophie had paid the price.

At 6:15 a.m., a nurse entered carrying a tray.

“Breakfast for our brave patient.”

Sophie opened her eyes.

The nurse placed a cup of juice beside the bed.

Ethan glanced at her badge.

MARIA SANTOS.

He had seen Maria several times during the night.

But something was different.

Her hair was covered by a surgical cap, and a mask concealed most of her face.

“Where is Nurse Hannah?” Ethan asked.

“She went on break.”

Maria reached for the juice.

“I’ll help Sophie drink.”

“I can do it.”

The nurse hesitated.

“It contains medication ordered by the physician.”

Ethan looked at the cup.

“The doctor did not mention medication.”

“It was added recently.”

Ethan turned toward the officer outside the room.

The nurse’s hand moved quickly.

She knocked the cup from the tray.

Orange liquid splashed across the floor.

Then she ran.

The officer shouted and followed her into the hallway.

Daniel appeared near the elevators, saw the fleeing nurse, and stepped into her path.

She tried to turn.

He grabbed her arm.

The surgical cap fell away.

The woman was not Nurse Maria.

She was younger.

Blond.

Terrified.

Hospital security rushed forward and forced her to the ground.

Ethan pulled Sophie against him.

“What happened?” Sophie cried.

“You’re safe.”

The woman screamed as officers handcuffed her.

“She made me do it!”

Detective Ortiz had warned him that Cassandra might strike again.

But Ethan had not expected it this quickly.

The liquid on the floor was sealed and sent for testing.

Within an hour, the laboratory confirmed that it contained a powerful sedative.

The amount was not likely to kill Sophie.

It was enough to make her unconscious.

Daniel stared through the observation window at the detained woman.

“Who is she?”

Detective Ortiz had returned from Grand Lake by helicopter.

“Her name is Brooke Ellis. She worked as Cassandra’s personal assistant.”

“Why sedate Sophie?”

Ortiz placed a phone on the table.

“We found this on Brooke.”

A message was open on the screen.

GET HER ASLEEP. MOVE HER DURING SHIFT CHANGE. SERVICE ELEVATOR B. VAN WILL BE WAITING.

The sender’s number was unregistered.

But Brooke had confessed that Cassandra sent the instructions.

“She said Cassandra threatened my brother,” Brooke told the officers. “She said he would go to prison if I refused.”

“For what?” Ortiz asked.

“He moved money for the Vale family.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

Ethan entered the interview room.

Brooke looked up at him.

“You were going to take my daughter.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I wasn’t going to hurt her.”

“You put drugs in her drink.”

“I was supposed to get her downstairs.”

“And then what?”

“I don’t know.”

“You knew enough.”

Brooke lowered her head.

“Where is Cassandra?” Ethan demanded.

“She changes locations constantly.”

“Who is helping her?”

Brooke glanced toward Detective Ortiz.

“Her mother. Her father. Dr. Bell. People from their company.”

“What company?”

“Vale Family Services.”

Olivia frowned.

“That’s their charitable foundation.”

Brooke gave a bitter laugh.

“It isn’t a charity.”

“What is it?”

Brooke’s voice dropped.

“They find wealthy families in crisis. Divorces. Custody disputes. Children with large inheritances.”

Ethan felt sick.

“They fabricate evidence,” Brooke continued. “They arrange evaluations. They pressure judges. They move children into private facilities.”

“And then?”

“They charge the trusts.”

Olivia understood first.

“They drain the children’s money through inflated care expenses.”

Brooke nodded.

“Therapy. Security. International schooling. Medical treatment. Everything goes through companies controlled by the Vales.”

“What happened to Addison?” Ortiz asked.

“Her mother discovered false invoices. Vivian ordered her fired. Then they took Addison to force Rachel to stay quiet.”

“Why was she still alive?”

“Insurance.”

“Against what?”

“If Rachel testified.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Where is Cassandra?”

“I don’t know.”

He stared at her.

Brooke began trembling.

“She contacted me from a satellite phone. She said she was watching the hospital.”

Everyone in the room turned toward the windows.

The hospital stood across from a multilevel parking garage.

Detective Ortiz grabbed her radio.

“Lock down every exit. Search the garage.”

Officers moved immediately.

Ten minutes later, they found an abandoned SUV on the sixth level.

Inside were binoculars, photographs of Sophie’s room, a hospital floor plan, and another pink overnight bag.

But Cassandra was gone.

On the driver’s seat lay an envelope addressed to Ethan.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Laura standing beside Cassandra at a charity gala nine years earlier.

Ethan had never known they had met.
