Chapter 9 - The Butterfly Wings

The night was warm and clear, the mountain sky an endless, velvety black canopy pinned with millions of brilliant, icy stars. The Milky Way stretched across the valley like a long, glowing road of silver dust.
Lily sat on the wide wooden railing of the porch, her small legs swinging back and forth, her fingers holding a small glass jar with small holes punched in the lid. Inside the jar, a large, beautiful Monarch butterfly—something she had found as a caterpillar in the garden three weeks before—was slowly sweeping its velvety orange and black wings against the glass.
Marcus stood beside her, his hand resting on the wooden post, his eyes full of a quiet, protective devotion as he looked down at her.
“Is he ready to fly, Lilybug?” Marcus asked softly.
Lily looked up at him, her amber eyes reflecting the starlight. “Yes, Marcus. His wings are strong now. He doesn't need the jar anymore.”
She carefully unscrewed the metal lid, setting it down on the railing. She reached her small hand inside, her index finger extended. The butterfly paused for a second, its delicate legs testing the skin of her finger, before climbing onto her hand.
Lily lifted her hand high above her head, her face alight with pure, golden excitement. “Go ahead! Fly to the stars!”
The butterfly gave a series of slow, rhythmic sweeps with its wings, testing the warm mountain breeze. Then, with a sudden, graceful launch, it lifted into the night, its bright orange form catching the light from the kitchen window as it rose higher and higher, disappearing into the vast, endless sky above the valley.
Elena walked out onto the porch, her arms slipping around Marcus’s waist from behind, her head resting against his shoulder blades. Lily scrambled down from the railing, throwing her arms around both of their legs, her body warm and solid against theirs.

“He found his way out, didn't he, Mommy?” Lily asked, looking up at me with her bright, trusting smile.
“Yes, he did, sweetie,” I said, my voice full of a profound, unbroken peace as I looked out over the dark, quiet valley that belonged entirely to us. “He found his wings. And we’re never letting anyone take them away again.”
