Chapter 19 - THE HOUSE THAT SURVIVED THE FIRE

The original Vale mansion stood beyond a forest in northern Maine.
Its public records showed that it had been destroyed twenty-nine years earlier.
In reality, only the eastern wing had burned.
Victor purchased the surrounding land through a shell company and kept the surviving mansion hidden.
Eleanor had lived there for most of her life.
Daniel’s team approached through the forest.
Adrian, Rose, and Nora entered through a tunnel once used by the household staff.
They found walls covered with photographs of the Vale family.
Adrian’s face had been cut from every picture.
Eleanor had replaced it with her own.
In the ballroom, a long dining table had been prepared.
Four place settings waited beneath dusty chandeliers.
Eleanor stood near the fireplace.
She was tall, dark-haired, and nearly identical to Adrian’s late father.
“You brought Mother.”
Rose stepped forward.
“I am not your mother.”
“You could have been.”
Eleanor’s smile was cold.
“Instead, you abandoned me to Victor.”
“Victor stole you.”
“He saved me.”
“He used you.”
Eleanor pointed toward Adrian.
“He received the name.”
“The fortune.”
“The house.”
“The life that should have been mine.”
Adrian looked around the ruined ballroom.
“Victor gave you a prison and convinced you it was an inheritance.”
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
She lifted a small remote.
A screen descended over the fireplace.
Lily appeared on it.
She was sitting in a locked bedroom somewhere inside the mansion.
Nora’s heart stopped.
Lily had been taken from the farmhouse by a woman posing as a federal officer.
Thomas had arranged the false credentials before his arrest.
Eleanor extended her hand.
“Sign the transfer documents.”
She had prepared papers giving her control over Vale Industries and Adrian’s personal trust.
“Then Lily goes free.”
Adrian picked up the pen.
Nora watched the screen.
Behind Lily was a narrow window.
Moonlight reflected from water.
The room overlooked the frozen lake behind the mansion.
Nora quietly left the ballroom through a servant passage.
Eleanor did not notice.
Adrian signed the first page.
Rose moved closer to Eleanor.
“You wanted a family.”
“You chose the one man who destroyed yours.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled with anger.
She pressed a second button.
Smoke began filling Lily’s room.
“Sign faster.”
Adrian turned another page.
Then every light in the mansion went out.
May you like
Nora had reached the main electrical panel.
Lily’s scream echoed through the darkness.
