Chapter 7 - The Encryption Key

The office was a monument to old money and ruthless power—leather-bound books, floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, and a massive oak desk facing a wall of glass that looked out over the sprawling, rain-swept estate gardens below.
I locked the heavy door behind us and guided Lorenzo toward the executive leather chair behind the desk. He sank into it with a stifled groan, clutching his side as fresh blood seeped through the tight linen bandage.
"The terminal," I panted, rushing over to the concealed wall panel behind a painting of the original Duca patriarch.
I pressed a hidden sequence of buttons Lorenzo barked out—two left, one right, center toggle—and the oak panel swung open to reveal a sleek, military-grade satellite uplink console glowing with blue diagnostic lights.
"Insert the flash drive into the primary USB port," Lorenzo instructed, his voice growing weaker by the second as blood loss took its toll.
I grabbed the silver flash drive Emma had found in the basement vault and jammed it into the slot.
Immediately, the console screen flickered to life, flashing a string of high-security warnings:
ACCESS RESTRICTED. ENCRYPTION PROTOCOL ACTIVE. UNKNOWN PROXY DETECTED.
"Override," Lorenzo commanded from the chair. "Use my biometric thumbprint on the optical scanner beside the screen."
I grabbed his cold, clammy hand and pressed his thumb firmly against the glass scanner.
BEEP.
ACCESS GRANTED. WELCOME, DIRECTOR DUCA.
"Now initiate the SEC data dump," Lorenzo said, leaning his head back against the leather headrest, his eyes fluttering closed. "The file labeled Syndicate_Alpha_2026."
I hovered my mouse over the flashing red icon on the screen.
Before I could click, the entire office console screen suddenly went black.
Then, a bright white dialogue box filled the monitor, accompanied by a harsh, grating electronic alarm:
WARNING: REMOTE OVERRIDE DETECTED. SYSTEM LOCKED BY ADMINISTRATOR: J. VANCE.
A soft, synthesized laugh echoed from the hidden ceiling speakers across the room.
“Nice try, nephew,” Julian Vance’s voice purred smoothly through the audio system, filled with cold, corporate triumph. “Did you really think I didn't install a secondary kill-switch on the executive terminal? The local network is locked. The board meeting starts in three hours, and by noon, your little midnight stunt will be classified as a hostile takeover attempt by an unstable fugitive.”
I stared at the black screen in horror. "Can we bypass it?"
"No," Lorenzo whispered, his eyes remaining closed, his voice barely audible over the hum of the cooling fans. "It’s a hardwired firmware block. Unless... unless we access the physical mainframe server in the attic."
"The attic?" I stared at him in disbelief. "We just spent twenty minutes crawling through the basement and riding a dumbwaiter like circus performers, and now you want me to climb another three stories while you’re bleeding out on a leather chair?"
"It’s the only way," he said, opening his dark eyes and looking at me with absolute, unyielding intensity. "If Julian locks that server, every bank account, every asset, and every legal protection the Duca family holds transfers directly to the Stanton-Vance trust. Including this estate. Including your job. Including your daughter's future."
Outside the heavy oak office door, a sudden sound echoed down the corridor.
Thud.
Then another.
Heavy boots, moving with deliberate, unhurried purpose, stopping directly outside the private office.
"Open the door," a cold, clipped voice commanded from the hallway.
May you like
It wasn't the guards.
It was Elena Duca.
