Chapter 9 - BLOOD DOESN'T MAKE A FAMILYAnthony Vale disappeared before federal agents reached his home.

His phone was abandoned near O'Hare.

His passport showed no departure.

His bank accounts remained untouched.

He had prepared for this.

Dominic was released on conditional bail after agreeing to cooperate.

The court fitted him with an electronic monitor and restricted travel.

He returned to the mansion under federal supervision.

Noah ran toward him.

Dominic dropped to his knees.

The boy crashed into his arms.

Clara watched from the foyer.

Everything had changed since the first day.

No screams.

No bronze horse.

No terrified child hiding beneath furniture.

Noah still struggled.

Still had nightmares.

Still sometimes panicked when clocks chimed.

But he had words now.

Words gave shape to fear.

Dominic saw Clara.

They looked at each other for several seconds.

Then Noah grabbed Clara's hand.

He dragged her toward Dominic.

“Clara stay.”

Neither adult spoke.

Noah pushed their hands together.

“Stay.”

Clara's throat tightened.

Dominic gently withdrew his hand.

Not rejection.

Respect.

He would not force a decision.

That made it harder.

Later, Agent Carter gathered them in the study.

“Victor's confession is partially corroborated.”

Anthony had inherited substantial debt from failed investments.

Elena discovered he was helping Victor shift Vale assets overseas.

She planned to expose him.

Anthony approved the staged roadside attack.

Victor coordinated it.

Marcus handled legal cleanup.

Hargrove drugged Noah afterward.

Dominic sat motionless.

“Why would Hargrove help them?”

Carter looked at him.

“Because Anthony is her son.”

Silence.

Dominic stared.

“What?”

“Hargrove had an affair with your uncle Daniel before Maria.”

Clara felt her stomach twist.

Anthony and Clara were half-siblings.

Hargrove had hidden the pregnancy.

Margaret Vale helped arrange an adoption within the extended family to avoid scandal.

Anthony grew up believing his adoptive parents were biological.

When he learned the truth, he became obsessed with inheritance.

Daniel's legitimate descendants threatened him.

Clara threatened him.

Noah threatened him.

Elena discovered everything.

Dominic stood.

“Where is Anthony?”

“We don't know.”

A guard entered.

“Sir.”

He held an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph of the Vale mansion.

A red circle marked Noah's bedroom.

On the back:

THE WRONG SON INHERITED EVERYTHING.

Dominic's face became stone.

Security doubled.

Federal agents surrounded the estate.

Yet Clara knew Anthony understood the house.

He had grown up there.

He knew tunnels.

Service entrances.

Blind spots.

That night, thunder rolled over Lake Michigan.

Noah refused to sleep alone.

Clara sat beside his bed reading a story.

Dominic stood in the doorway.

For the first time, the sight felt almost domestic.

Dangerously domestic.

Noah fell asleep.

Clara stepped into the hall.

Dominic closed the door.

“Thank you.”

“For reading?”

“For everything.”

She crossed her arms.

“You don't owe me gratitude every five minutes.”

“I don't know what else I'm allowed to give you.”

The sentence landed between them.

Clara looked away.

“Dominic—”

“I know.”

“No, you don't.”

“Then tell me.”

She turned.

“I don't know how to care about someone whose past scares me.”

His face remained steady.

“You shouldn't ignore it.”

“I don't.”

“Good.”

“That isn't helpful.”

He almost smiled.

“I have no experience being helpful.”

She laughed despite herself.

Then became serious.

“If you go to prison?”

“I go.”

“No deals?”

“I'll cooperate. I'll accept whatever the court decides.”

“And Noah?”

His expression broke.

“You.”

Clara froze.

“What?”

“If something happens, I want you named temporary guardian.”

“No.”

“Clara.”

“No. You're his father. You don't get to disappear into guilt and hand me your child like paperwork.”

He stared at her.

“I could lose years.”

“Then fight for the man you'll be when you come home.”

Silence.

Dominic stepped closer.

Not touching.

“You make everything difficult.”

“You're welcome.”

This time he smiled fully.

It transformed him.

For one second, Clara saw the man Elena must once have loved.

Then the security alarms died.

All at once.

Dominic's smile vanished.

The hallway lights went dark.

Clara whispered:

“Anthony.”

A shot sounded downstairs.

Dominic shoved Clara into Noah's room.

“Lock it.”

“No.”

“Clara.”

“Stop ordering me around.”

Another shot.

Noah woke crying.

Dominic handed Clara a phone.

“Call Carter.”

Then he moved into the hallway.

Clara locked the door.

She held Noah close.

Downstairs, footsteps.

Gunfire.

Shouting.

Then silence.

Too much silence.

A shadow appeared beneath the bedroom door.

Clara grabbed the bronze horse from Noah's shelf.

The same one he had thrown at her.

The handle turned.

Locked.

A voice whispered:

“Clara.”

Anthony.

Her blood froze.

“Open the door.”

No response.

“I'm your brother.”

She almost laughed.

“Brothers don't shoot through houses.”

“You don't know what they stole from me.”

Clara held Noah tighter.

“You mean what you think you're owed.”

“I was Daniel's first child.”

“You murdered Elena.”

“She was going to ruin everything.”

There.

A confession.

Clara looked at the phone.

The line to Agent Carter was open.

Anthony continued.

“You grew up poor because Maria hid you. I grew up watching Dominic inherit the world.”

“So you killed for money.”

“For justice.”

“No.”

Clara approached the door.

“You killed because you couldn't stand that someone else had more.”

Silence.

Then the door exploded inward.

Anthony fired through the lock.

Clara pulled Noah into the bathroom.

She slammed the door.

Anthony entered the bedroom.

“Noah!”

Clara opened the bathroom window.

Two floors above the courtyard.

No escape.

Anthony kicked the bathroom door.

Once.

Twice.

Wood splintered.

Noah covered his ears.

“Clara!”

“Look at me.”

His eyes found hers.

“You are brave.”

Door cracking.

“You are loved.”

Another kick.

“And none of this is your fault.”

The door burst open.

Anthony raised the gun.

Clara threw the bronze horse.

It struck his face.

The gun fired.

Clara fell.

Noah screamed.

Blood spread across her shoulder.

Anthony stepped forward.

Then Dominic appeared behind him.

He had blood down one side of his face.

His gun aimed directly at Anthony's head.

“Move away from them.”

Anthony laughed.

“Always the hero.”

“Move.”

“You took everything.”

Dominic's voice was cold.

“No. You destroyed yourself trying to take what belonged to everyone else.”

Anthony turned his gun toward Noah.

Dominic fired.

Anthony collapsed.

Federal agents stormed the hallway.

Clara barely heard them.

Dominic dropped beside her.

“No.”

His hands pressed against her wound.

“Stay with me.”

Noah cried beside him.

Clara looked at Dominic.

“It's my shoulder.”

“You're bleeding.”

“I noticed.”

His hands shook.

She had never seen him this afraid.

“Dominic.”

“What?”

“I'm not Elena.”

His face crumpled.

“I know.”

“You don't get to lose me because you lost her.”

He pressed his forehead against hers.

“No.”

“Then breathe.”

Sirens filled the estate.

Noah placed both small hands over theirs.

May you like

And for the first time, the three of them sat together not because disaster had forced them into the same room.

But because none of them wanted to let go.
