Chapter 7: The Devil’s Bargain

Sophie didn’t run; she fought. Grabbing a heavy brass paperweight from an abandoned desk, she hurled it at the overhead fluorescent fixture, plunging the archive room into total darkness. In the chaos, as Marcus shouted for his men, Sophie slipped through the maze of filing cabinets, using her intimate childhood knowledge of the building's emergency blueprints. She burst out of an old steam vent exit into the freezing New York night, the ledger safely tucked into her coat.

But having the evidence wasn’t enough. The FBI had failed her once; the system was clearly compromised. She needed someone who operated outside the law, someone who hated Arthur Sterling as much as she did.

Enter Julian Croft. Once a brilliant hedge fund manager, Julian had been systematically ruined by Arthur five years prior, framed for insider trading to cover Arthur’s tracks. He had spent three years in federal prison and emerged a ghost, operating a covert cyber-intelligence network from a heavily fortified loft in Brooklyn.

When Sophie arrived at his door, drenched in cold rain and shivering, Julian pointed a Glock 19 at her chest before recognizing her.

“You have a lot of nerve showing your face here, Sterling,” Julian growled, lowering the weapon slightly but keeping his eyes locked on hers.

“My father is stealing my life back, Julian,” Sophie said, stepping into the loft uninvited. She tossed the ledger onto his metal workstation. “He’s running his empire from inside the pen. He froze my mother’s trust, and he has Marcus Vance acting as his proxy. You want revenge for the years he stole from you? Help me destroy him permanently.”

Julian spent the next twelve hours dissecting the ledger alongside his array of glowing monitors. The truth they uncovered was staggering. Arthur wasn't just hiding money; he was orchestrating a massive short-selling scheme set to crash the stock of three major pharmaceutical companies, profiting billions through his offshore accounts. The final authorization for the trade required Arthur's biometric signature—a thumbprint—which he was planning to transmit via a smuggled encrypted device during the prison's upcoming chaotic transfer week.

“He’s moving the money on Friday,” Julian announced, rubbing his bloodshot eyes. “If this trade goes through, he’ll have enough liquid capital to buy his way out of a maximum-security sentence, vanish to a non-extradition country, and put out a hit on you and your mother that no one can stop.”

“Then we stop the trade,” Sophie said, her jaw set in terrifying determination. “We cut off the head of the snake.”
