Chapter 2

The Truth Beneath the Lies

Vivian staggered back, gripping the railing. “No… no, that’s not possible. I built everything I have.”

Julian let out a bitter laugh. “You married into a shell company I created. Every contract, every deal—it all led back to me.”

Her face drained of color.

“You were a test,” he continued. “A test you failed the moment you treated another human being like nothing.”

Vivian’s gaze flickered to Clara, then back to Julian. “So what? You’re throwing everything away… for her?”

Julian’s expression softened—but only when he looked at Clara.

“I’m not throwing anything away,” he said. “I’m correcting a mistake.”

Clara tried to pull back. “Julian, stop… please. I don’t want this. I just wanted to survive.”

He shook his head gently. “You were never meant to survive like this.”

Vivian’s voice turned desperate. “Julian, listen to me. We can fix this. I can change. I didn’t know she meant anything to you.”

“That’s the problem,” Julian said. “She shouldn’t have to mean something to me for you to treat her like a human being.”

The weight of that truth crushed the room.

Just then, Clara whispered, “Why… why did you come back?”

Julian hesitated.

Then, quietly, he answered, “Because I never left you.”

Clara looked up, confused.

“I placed you here,” he admitted. “Under protection. I thought you’d be safe working in one of my estates.”

Her eyes widened. “You knew…?”

“I knew your past,” he said softly. “I knew you were running from people who wanted to hurt you. I promised myself no one would ever touch you again.”

A tear slid down Clara’s cheek.

“But I was wrong,” Julian continued, his voice breaking slightly. “I trusted the wrong person.”

Vivian’s composure finally shattered. “You’re insane,” she whispered. “You’re destroying me for a maid.”

Julian’s gaze hardened again. “No. I’m destroying you for who you chose to be.”
