Chapter 3: The First Night at the Estate

The room fell into a suffocating silence.
Mateo Vargas picked up the photograph without a word.
His expression did not change, but Aurelio noticed something he had never expected to see in the face of the city's most feared man.
Concern.
Not for himself.
For the boy standing across from him.
"Where did you find this?" Vargas asked.
"About fifty yards from the east gate," the guard replied. "Three men were lying beside the service road."
"Dead?"
"All three."
"How?"
The guard hesitated.
"No gunshots."
"No stab wounds."
"It looks like... their necks were broken."
Vargas's eyes narrowed.
"Professionals."
The guard nodded.
"And whoever killed them searched their pockets afterward."
"What was left?"
"Only this photograph."
Vargas looked down at the faded picture again.
Someone had written the words with fresh red marker.
FOUND HIM ALIVE.
It wasn't a message for the dead men.
It was a message for Vargas.
Someone wanted him to know that Aurelio had become the center of a hunt.
"Seal the estate," Vargas ordered.
"No one enters."
"No one leaves."
"And double the guards."
"Yes, Boss."
The guard hurried from the library.
As the heavy door closed, Aurelio finally found his voice.
"Who are they?"
"I don't know."
"You keep saying that."
"Because it's the truth."
Vargas placed the photograph on the desk.
"I've ruled this city for nearly thirty years."
"I know every gang."
"Every smuggler."
"Every corrupt politician."
He looked directly at Aurelio.
"But whoever is behind this..."
"...has stayed invisible."
Aurelio stared at the letter in his hands.
"My grandmother knew."
"She suspected."
"That's why she hid you."
The boy frowned.
"Hid me?"
Vargas walked toward one of the bookshelves.
He pressed a hidden switch.
With a quiet click, part of the shelf swung open, revealing a narrow steel safe built into the wall.
From inside, he removed a worn leather journal.
Its cover was cracked with age.
"This belonged to your grandmother."
Aurelio's eyes widened.
"She left you her diary?"
"No."
Vargas shook his head.
"She forced me to keep it."
He handed it over.
"She told me that if anything happened to her, I was to give it to you—but only after I was certain you were alive."
Aurelio carefully opened the journal.
Most of the pages contained ordinary entries.
Shopping lists.
Recipes.
Small notes about flowers growing in the garden.
Then, halfway through, the handwriting changed.
The cheerful entries disappeared.
The writing became hurried.
Uneven.
As though each sentence had been written in fear.
He read aloud.
Someone is watching the house again tonight.
He turned the page.
The same gray sedan has passed three times.
Another page.
Aurelio asked why we never visit his parents' grave. I told him he was too young. I hated lying to him.
His throat tightened.
There wasn't a grave?
His parents had no grave?
He flipped faster.
Each entry became darker than the last.
If they discover the truth, they will kill him.
I can protect him only while they believe he died with his parents.
God forgive me for the lies I have told my grandson.
A folded piece of paper slipped from between the pages and landed on the floor.
Aurelio picked it up.
It wasn't a letter.
It was a photograph.
An old family portrait.
His grandmother stood in the center, smiling warmly.
Beside her was a young man Aurelio had never seen before.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
Wearing a police uniform.
He had one arm around Esperanza's shoulders.
In the other arm...
...he was holding a baby.
Aurelio.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written in blue ink.
Miguel Mendoza and his son. Summer, 2014.
"My father..."
Aurelio whispered.
"He was a police officer?"
Vargas nodded.
"One of the best."
"But everyone told me he died in a car accident."
"He didn't."
"Then how did he die?"
Vargas took a long breath.
"He arrested the wrong man."
Before Aurelio could ask another question, a deafening explosion shook the mansion.
The windows rattled violently.
Books crashed from the shelves.
The lights flickered.
A second later, alarms screamed throughout the estate.
Red emergency lights began flashing in the hallway.
The library door burst open.
The same guard rushed inside, breathing heavily.
"They're attacking!"
"How many?"
"We don't know!"
"The cameras are down!"
Another explosion thundered outside.
This one was even closer.
The floor trembled beneath their feet.
Gunfire erupted across the estate.
Short bursts.
Disciplined.
Military.
Not gangsters firing wildly.
Whoever had come...
...had planned this.
Vargas reached inside his jacket and drew a black pistol.
It was the first time Aurelio had ever seen him armed.
The old man's voice remained perfectly calm.
"They're not here for me."
He looked straight at the frightened twelve-year-old.
"They're here for you."
Aurelio felt every drop of blood drain from his face.
"For me?"
"Because someone finally learned the truth."
"What truth?"
Vargas's answer came without hesitation.
"Your father didn't die protecting evidence."
He stepped closer.
"He died protecting you."
At that exact moment, another explosion ripped through the mansion.
The library wall cracked from floor to ceiling.
Stone dust filled the air.
Then, through the smoke, a laser sight appeared on Vargas's chest.
A tiny red dot.
Perfectly steady.
A sniper.
From somewhere outside the estate.
Without thinking, Aurelio shouted,
"Look out!"
He threw himself forward just as the rifle fired.

The bullet shattered the window—
—and missed Vargas's heart by less than an inch.
