Part 3 – The Daughter He Never Knew Was Dying

Nathan Brooks didn't remember leaving the conference room.
One moment, he was standing before a table covered in billion-dollar contracts.
The next...
He was running.
Not walking.
Running.
Executives, lawyers, and assistants hurried after him, but none could keep pace.
Only Lucy managed to stay close, clutching the straps of her faded pink backpack as she hurried beside him.
"Nathan!" the board chairman shouted.
"The acquisition—"
Nathan didn't even turn around.
"Postpone it."
"The investors are already here!"
"Then tell them the truth."
He pressed the elevator button repeatedly.
"I have a daughter who's dying."
The doors opened.
Nathan stepped inside with Lucy.
Just before they closed, Daniel slipped through the narrowing gap.
Nathan's expression hardened instantly.
"Get out."
"I need to explain."
"You've had thirty-one years."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I know where Claire is."
Nathan stared at him.
"You've been visiting her."
It wasn't a question.
Daniel said nothing.
The silence answered everything.
Nathan grabbed his brother by the front of his jacket.
"You knew where my daughter lived..."
"You knew I had a granddaughter..."
"You watched them struggle..."
"And you never said a word?"
Daniel's voice barely escaped.
"I sent money."
Nathan released him as if touching him had become unbearable.
"They didn't need your money."
"They needed their family."
The elevator doors opened onto the underground parking garage.
Nathan headed straight toward his black sedan.
Lucy climbed into the passenger seat.
Daniel stood a few feet away.
"The hospital is St. Gabriel's."
Nathan paused.
"One more lie..."
Daniel looked him in the eyes.
"This time, I'm telling the truth."
Without another word, Nathan drove away.
For almost twenty minutes...
Neither Nathan nor Lucy spoke.
Rain began falling softly against the windshield.
Nathan tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
Finally, he asked quietly,
"Does your mom know my name?"
Lucy nodded.
"She found out twelve years ago."
"Twelve years..."
He swallowed.
"Why didn't she come?"
Lucy looked out the window.
"She wanted to."
"What stopped her?"
"Grandma Evelyn."
Nathan frowned.
"My mother?"
"She asked Mommy to wait."
"Wait for what?"
Lucy repeated the words exactly as she had heard them.
"'Nathan has enemies inside his own family. If he learns the truth before I'm gone, they'll destroy him and Claire.'"
Nathan's heart pounded.
His own mother had known.
She had tried to protect him.
Protect Claire.
Protect everyone.
But she had died before she could tell him everything.
"What happened after Grandma died?"
Lucy looked down.
"Mommy got scared."
"Of Daniel?"
She nodded.
"He kept watching us."
Nathan slammed the brakes at a red light.
"What do you mean?"
"He never talked to us."
"But sometimes..."
She hesitated.
"...he sat across the street."
Nathan slowly turned toward her.
"You've seen him?"
"Lots of times."
"Did he ever speak to your mother?"
Lucy shook her head.
"No."
"What did he do?"
"He cried."
Nathan blinked.
"What?"
"I saw him crying in his car."
The traffic light turned green.
Nathan pulled forward.
His thoughts became even more confused.
If Daniel had been watching them...
Then perhaps guilt had followed him all these years.
But guilt wasn't forgiveness.
It certainly wasn't justice.
St. Gabriel's Hospital stood on a quiet hill overlooking the river.
Nathan parked so carelessly that his car blocked two emergency spaces.
He didn't notice.
Lucy was already running toward the entrance.
She led him to the oncology wing.
Room 614.
Nathan stopped outside the door.
His hand hovered over the handle.
"What if..."
He whispered.
"What if she hates me?"
Lucy smiled sadly.
"She doesn't."
"How do you know?"
"Because every birthday..."
"Mommy bought an extra cupcake."
Nathan frowned.
"For who?"
"You."
His knees almost gave out.
Lucy continued.
"She always lit two candles."
"One for me."
"One for the grandpa I hadn't met yet."
Nathan covered his mouth.
Thirty-one years.
Every birthday.
She had still believed.
Inside the room...
Machines beeped steadily.
Claire Lawson looked nothing like the little baby in the photograph.
She was thirty-one now.
Thin.
Pale.
Her dark hair had nearly disappeared beneath a knitted cap.
An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.
She looked exhausted.
But peaceful.
Nathan stood frozen beside the doorway.
Lucy quietly walked over and kissed her mother's forehead.
"Mom..."
No response.
Nathan took one slow step closer.
He could see Emma in Claire's face.
The same eyes.
The same smile, even while sleeping.
The same tiny dimple near her left cheek.
He whispered,
"I'm so sorry."
A nurse entered quietly.
She looked surprised to see another visitor.
"Family?"
Lucy answered first.
"Yes."
The nurse smiled kindly.
"Good."
"She's been asking for her father in her sleep."
Nathan felt tears filling his eyes again.
The nurse checked Claire's IV.
"She has leukemia."
Nathan looked up sharply.
"What?"
"The treatments worked for a while."
"But..."
She didn't finish the sentence.
She didn't have to.
Nathan understood.
"How long has she been here?"
"Three weeks."
"And nobody contacted me?"
The nurse looked confused.
"We contacted the next of kin listed in her file."
Nathan looked toward Lucy.
"Who?"
Before the nurse could answer...
A familiar voice spoke from behind them.
"I told the hospital she didn't have any other family."
Nathan slowly turned around.
Daniel stood in the hallway.
Holding a folder.
Nathan's expression darkened.
"You did what?"
Daniel's face was filled with shame.
"I'm listed as her emergency contact."
Nathan stared at him in disbelief.
"Why?"
"Because Claire never trusted anyone else from the Brooks family."
Nathan's voice became ice.
"So you stayed close enough to watch."
"But never close enough to tell her the truth."
Daniel nodded.
"I know."
"I deserve whatever you do next."
Nathan took a step toward him.
"I should call the police."
"You should."
"I should throw you out of this hospital."
"You should."
"But before you do..."
Daniel handed him the folder.
Nathan opened it.
Medical bills.
Treatment records.
Insurance denials.
Payment receipts.
Every single bill...
Paid in full.
Nathan looked up.
"You paid for all this?"
Daniel nodded.
"For eight years."
"Why?"
"Because..."
His voice broke.
"It was the only way I knew how to apologize."
Nathan closed the folder.
"It wasn't enough."
"I know."
"You stole thirty-one years from both of us."
"I know."
"You let my daughter believe I abandoned her."
Daniel whispered,
"I know."
Nathan looked through the hospital room window.
Claire remained asleep.
Lucy sat beside the bed, holding her mother's hand.
Nathan suddenly realized something.
"Wait..."
He turned back toward Daniel.
"If Claire thought I abandoned her..."
"Then why did Lucy come looking for me today?"
Daniel looked toward the floor.
"Because Claire never told her the lie."
Nathan frowned.
"What?"
"Claire found Emma's journal after her mother died."
"She learned the truth."
Nathan felt hope returning for the first time all day.
"She knew?"
Daniel nodded.
"She knew you never abandoned her."
Nathan smiled through tears.
"Then why didn't she come?"
Daniel answered with a sentence that shattered him all over again.
"Because she said..."
"If my father has lived thirty years believing I hated him..."
"I won't destroy the life he built..."
"...unless I know I'm running out of time."
Nathan slowly looked through the glass again.
His daughter hadn't stayed away because she was angry.
She had stayed away...
Because she loved him enough not to turn his world upside down.
At that exact moment...
The heart monitor inside Claire's room suddenly began beeping faster.
The nurse turned.
Doctors rushed toward the bed.
Lucy stepped backward in fear.
"Nurse!"
One doctor shouted,
"She's crashing!"
Nathan ran into the room just as alarms echoed through the hallway.

And for the second time that day...
His entire world stopped.
