PART 2: UNDER THE BED

Getting out of the hospital bed felt impossible.
My body screamed with every movement.
But Emily was right there.
Helping me.
Trying not to cry.
“Careful, Mom.”
I lowered myself slowly.
The floor was cold.
My legs barely held me.
The space under the bed was small, uncomfortable, and terrifying.
But I crawled beneath it.
Emily stayed beside the bed.
Trying to look normal.
Trying to hide her fear.
I barely had time to pull the blanket down before the door opened.
Footsteps entered.
A pair of expensive heels.
Linda.
My heart raced.
Then another pair of shoes.
A man.
The doctor?
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
Trying not to breathe too loudly.
Linda spoke first.
Calm.
Confident.
“Doctor, she should be ready now.”
Ready?
For what?
The doctor didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“She’s not here.”
Silence.
A long, uncomfortable silence.
Linda’s voice changed slightly.
“What do you mean?”
“The patient is gone.”
“She was just here.”
My hands shook.
I could hear the anger hiding beneath Linda’s calm tone.
She wasn’t worried.
She was frustrated.
Like something had gone wrong with a plan.
The doctor lowered his voice.
“Mrs. Whitmore, I need to ask…”
A pause.
“What procedure exactly are you expecting?”
My blood turned cold.
Procedure?
What were they talking about?
Linda didn’t answer.
The room became silent.
Then a new voice appeared.
Firm.
Serious.
“What is happening here?”
Everyone froze.
The new voice sounded official.
Not a doctor.
Not a nurse.
Security.
I heard footsteps move closer.
“I think we need to see the consent documents,” the man said.
My heart pounded.
Consent documents.
The exact words Emily mentioned.
Linda suddenly sounded nervous.
May you like
“This is a misunderstanding.”
But the confidence was gone.
