Chapter 4 - THE DEAD MAN’S VIDEO
Charles demanded that the file be examined immediately.
A forensic specialist confirmed that the video had not been digitally altered.
The date was genuine.
Andrew Whitmore had recorded it six months after the crash that supposedly killed him.
Noah watched the screen repeatedly.
“My father is alive.”
Evelyn wanted to protect him from hope that might collapse.
“We know he was alive when this was recorded.”
“Then he could still be alive now.”
Charles looked toward the dark windows.
“If Victoria hid him, she needed him for something.”
“Signatures,” Evelyn said.
Andrew had inherited forty percent of Whitmore Maritime from his late mother.
After his death, those shares remained in trust for Noah.
Victoria had managed them as Noah’s guardian.
If Andrew was alive, every transfer she approved using his death certificate could be canceled.
The empire she controlled would disappear.
Detective Quinn returned with news.
Adrian Vale had been arrested at a private airfield.
Victoria remained missing.
During questioning, Adrian admitted helping create false medical and identity records. He refused to reveal Andrew’s location.
He did, however, name Victoria’s father.
Malcolm Mills.
Charles recognized him as a physician who once managed medical services for the Whitmore shipping fleet.
He had also signed Anna Brooks’s death certificate.
Evelyn felt cold.
The same family that helped erase Andrew had erased her mother.
Police recovered Anna’s original scene photographs from a sealed archive.
The images showed bruising inconsistent with a staircase fall. A maintenance camera near her apartment had been disconnected ten minutes before her death.
The last person recorded entering the building was Victoria.
Evelyn looked at Charles.
“You hired the daughter of the man who signed my mother’s false report.”
“I did not know who Victoria was.”
“You investigate every person who comes near your company.”
“She used another identity.”
“You investigated profits more carefully than people.”
Charles did not defend himself.
Noah opened his father’s video again.
At the end of the recording, a reflection appeared in a metal cabinet behind Andrew.
A nurse stood near the door.
Evelyn enlarged the image.
She recognized the woman.
Agnes Reed, the elderly therapy nurse who had cared for Noah after the crash.
Agnes had retired to a coastal village one year earlier.
They found her in a small cottage overlooking the sea.
When she saw Noah, she began crying.
“You look like your father.”
“Where is he?” Noah asked.
Agnes looked toward Charles.
“You should have protected him.”
“Tell us where he is,” Evelyn said.
Agnes explained that Andrew survived the crash with severe head injuries.
Victoria transferred him under a false name to a neurological facility owned by Adrian Vale’s brother.
For months, Andrew could not speak.
When he began recovering, Agnes helped him record the video.
He planned to escape.
Victoria discovered the plan.
“What did she do?” Noah asked.
“She moved him.”
“Where?”
Agnes looked at Evelyn.
“To a medical ship owned by Whitmore Maritime.”
Charles’s face changed.
The company maintained a private rehabilitation vessel for injured executives and crew members.
It had remained offshore for years.
The vessel was called Haven Star.
Charles contacted maritime control.
The ship had departed American waters that morning.
Its destination was listed as Iceland.
Noah gripped Evelyn’s hand.
“We have to stop it.”
Charles ordered a company aircraft prepared.
Evelyn turned toward him.
“Noah is not going.”
“Yes, I am,” the boy said.
“It could be dangerous.”
“He is my father.”
Evelyn looked at him.
She remembered how many adults had decided what Noah could endure without asking him.
“Then we go together.”
Before leaving, Agnes gave Evelyn a sealed envelope Andrew had entrusted to her.
Inside was another letter.
Evelyn,
If you are reading this, Charles has finally admitted who you are. Do not mistake inheritance for love. He chose you as co-heir because Noah will need someone who cannot be purchased.
Beneath the message was an additional warning.
Do not let Charles board Haven Star.
He knows why I was kept alive.
Evelyn folded the letter before Noah could see it.
Charles had claimed he did not know Andrew survived.
Andrew’s warning suggested otherwise.
