CHAPTER 4: THE FALL OF AN EMPIRE

The headlights from the SUVs outside continued to shine through the large windows of the Vale mansion, cutting the space into flickering patches of light and shadow. Adrian lay sprawled on the cold marble floor, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He looked at the $1 transfer contract before him, then at the heavy stack of evidence that could land him in prison for life.

The choice, in reality, never existed.

"I... I sign," Adrian whispered, his voice hoarse like that of a drowning man.

He crawled forward, his hand trembling as he grasped the gold-plated fountain pen offered by the lawyer. Each stroke of his signature on the contract felt like a knife cutting into his own throat. When he dipped the pen in ink on the last page, Adrian collapsed, the pen falling from his hand and rolling across the stone floor.

"Very good," the lawyer took back the contract, carefully checked each signature, and nodded to Richard Sterling. "All legal procedures will be completed by 8 a.m. tomorrow."

Seeing this, Vanessa crawled to Evelyn's feet, tears smudging her expensive makeup: "Evelyn... no, Ms. Sterling! We used to be friends! I helped you when you first came to this city! Please, tell your father to spare my family! My father will die if the family company is implicated!"

Evelyn looked down at the woman pleading at her feet. Just fifteen minutes ago, this same woman had thrown champagne in her face, mocking her self-proclaimed 'bottom of society' origins.

"Vanessa," Evelyn said calmly. "The day you gave Adrian the whip and told him to discipline me, do you remember what you said?"

Vanessa blinked blankly, tears streaming down her face.

"You said, 'The weak must accept their fate.' Now, I'm just returning that very statement to you."

Evelyn turned away, not giving Vanessa another glance. The doctor gently draped Richard's vest back over her shoulders, carefully concealing the still-bleeding wounds.

"Take Ms. Sterling to the car," Richard ordered the security detail. "To the private hospital immediately."

"Should we withdraw, sir?" the head of security asked.

"Wait," Richard turned back, his gaze fixed on Adrian lying sprawled on the floor. "I didn't say those documents wouldn't be sent, I only said 'postpone for 48 hours.' But it seems... the tax authorities have already discovered the irregularities this afternoon."

Adrian lifted his head, his eyes wide with shock: "You... what did you say?"

Just then, the sirens of police cars and Economic Crime Investigation Unit vehicles blared from afar. The sound grew closer, shattering the peaceful atmosphere of the upscale Vale estate. Like a preordained storm, flashing red and green lights began sweeping across the towering walls of the mansion.

"You promised!" Adrian screamed in panic, trying to stand but his legs giving way. "You promised not to submit the documents if I signed!"

"I didn't submit them," Richard Sterling calmly replied, adjusting his cufflinks. "My daughter submitted them three hours ago. The contract was simply to reclaim what my family lost two years ago. Everything was done according to legal procedure."

The mansion's large doors were once again forcefully pushed open. This time it wasn't the private security force, but uniformed police officers and representatives from the Prosecutor's Office.

"Adrian Vale? Ms. Vanessa Luong?" The leading officer entered, issuing an emergency arrest warrant. "We are executing arrest warrants for you two on charges of fraud, tax evasion, and large-scale money laundering. Please come with us."

Cold steel handcuffs quickly locked around Adrian and Vanessa's wrists. Vanessa cried out desperately, repeatedly calling her father's name in despair, while Adrian, completely devoid of resistance, was dragged out the door by two police officers.

Evelyn stood in the lobby, watching the police cars escort Adrian and Vanessa away. The night wind blew, tossing her father's black hair and expensive suit jacket. The pain from her back wounds still ached, but a feeling of unprecedented relief spread through her heart.

Richard walked to his daughter's side, placing his warm hand on her shoulder.

"It's all over, my daughter."

Evelyn turned to look at the brightly lit mansion, now empty and cold – the place that had held her captive for two years of humiliation and calculation. She gently shook her head:

"It's not over, Father. This is just the beginning of reclaiming everything that belongs to the Sterling family."

Richard looked at his daughter, a mixture of pride and bitterness in his eyes. His once innocent little daughter had grown through the flames of betrayal, becoming a truly capable and ruthless heiress.

"Alright," Richard smiled faintly. "Let's go home."

The black limousine pulled up in front of the gate. The guards opened the door, and Evelyn stepped inside, leaving behind the Vale mansion, slowly sinking into darkness and the desolation of a fallen empire.
