Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Accident

No one moved.

The wire cutters sat on the floor like a confession.

Daniel looked down at them.

For the first time that night, his confidence disappeared.

Only for a moment.

Then he smiled.

A fake smile.

“This is ridiculous,” he said. “Someone must have planted these.”

But nobody believed him.

Especially Emily.

She slowly stood with Clara’s help, her face filled with confusion.

“Daniel…”

Her voice was quiet.

Almost afraid.

“Why were those in your pocket?”

Daniel immediately turned toward her.

“Emily, don’t do this. You’re emotional. You almost got hurt.”

Clara stepped forward.

“No. She is asking the right question.”

Daniel’s eyes became sharp.

“You’re just a maid.”

The words cut deeper than he expected.

Because Clara had spent six years protecting that family.

She had cared for Emily when Daniel was too busy building his company.

She had stayed awake during hospital visits.

She had held Emily’s hand when doctors warned her about complications with the pregnancy.

And now Daniel looked at her like she was nothing.

Clara lowered her voice.

“I may be a maid, Mr. Carter. But I have eyes.”

The guests watched silently.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I saw you near the staircase fifteen minutes before the accident.”

A murmur moved through the room.

Daniel laughed.

“She’s lying.”

Clara shook her head.

“No. I saw you checking the chandelier.”

Emily’s face changed.

A memory returned.

Earlier that evening, Daniel had told everyone not to stand near the staircase because “the lighting system was being inspected.”

At the time, nobody questioned it.

Now it sounded different.

Suspicious.

Emily looked at her husband.

“Daniel… what were you doing?”

He stepped toward her.

“Emily, listen to me.”

But before he could continue, Clara noticed something else.

A small piece of metal caught beneath Daniel’s sleeve.

She grabbed his wrist.

“Wait.”

Everyone gasped.

Daniel pulled away.

“What are you doing?”

Clara pointed.

“Your sleeve.”

Slowly, she lifted the fabric.

There was a small cut on his wrist.

Fresh.

The same silver dust from the chandelier cable was stuck near the wound.

Emily covered her mouth.

The truth was becoming impossible to ignore.

Daniel’s expression changed.

The charming husband disappeared.

The loving father-to-be disappeared.

For a moment, everyone saw something darker.

Something desperate.

Then Daniel whispered:

“You have no idea what you’ve ruined.”

Clara looked at him calmly.

“No, Daniel.”

She glanced at Emily.

“You’re the one who ruined everything.”

And at that moment, the mansion’s security alarm suddenly started ringing.

Someone had triggered the emergency system.

The entire house went into lockdown.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

“Security breach detected.”

Emily looked toward the entrance.

Because the person who had entered the mansion was someone Daniel never expected to see.

Someone who knew the truth about his plan.

And someone who was about to reveal the secret hidden inside the Carter family for ten years.
