Chapter Six – Justice

Three weeks later...
Every major television network interrupted its regular programming.
The De la Vega family had announced an extraordinary press conference.
Reporters crowded the ballroom where Verónica had celebrated her birthday only weeks before.
She entered confidently.
She still believed she controlled the story.
Then she noticed Alejandro.
Beside him stood Elena.
Behind them...
Doctor Salazar.
Verónica's smile disappeared.
"What is this?"
Alejandro stepped to the podium.
"For twenty-two years..."
"...the De la Vega family has lived beneath a lie."
He held up Isabel's journal.
"This is her testimony."
Next came the original will.
Then the medical reports.
Then the laboratory analysis proving Arturo had been poisoned.
The room erupted.
Reporters shouted questions.
Camera flashes exploded.
Verónica lunged toward the documents.
"Those are fake!"
Doctor Salazar stepped forward.
"No."
"They are real."
"And I helped hide the truth."
The confession echoed through the ballroom.
Police officers entered from every doorway.
The lead investigator unfolded an arrest warrant.
"Verónica De la Vega..."
"You are under arrest for conspiracy, fraud, attempted murder, forgery, and the murder of Arturo De la Vega."
She laughed.
"No jury will believe this servant over me."
The investigator quietly answered,
"They don't have to."
He held up another document.
"The DNA results arrived this morning."
He looked toward Elena.
"She is Arturo De la Vega's biological granddaughter."
Complete silence.
Even Verónica stopped speaking.
Handcuffs closed around her wrists.
As officers led her away, she turned toward Elena with hatred burning in her eyes.
"I gave you nothing."
Elena answered softly,
"You took everything."
May you like
"And today..."
"...the truth took it back."
