Chapter 2 - The Silent Witness

Clara lay on the floor for a heartbeat, the shock vibrating through her ribs like a trapped bird. Her fingers, small and trembling, scrambled against the cold hardwood as she pushed herself upward. Her reflection caught her eye in the long mirrors, and she stopped, momentarily paralyzed.

Her hair, once a cascade of golden sunlight, was now a jagged, uneven mess that framed her face in a display of raw, unfiltered vulnerability. Tears—not the loud, sobbing kind, but hot, silent tracks of humiliation—streamed down her flushed cheeks. She reached up to touch the uneven ends of her hair, her small hands shaking, her eyes wide with the trauma of an erasure she could not possibly understand.

Three feet away stood Elias, the studio’s master tailor. He was a man composed of gentle habits and soft edges, currently trapped in a sweater-vest of blue wool that offered him no protection. A measuring tape was draped around his neck like a noose, the yellow vinyl vivid against the dark wood of the studio.

Elias had been a witness to a thousand fittings, a thousand moments of vanity, but he had never witnessed the death of a soul. He remained frozen, his eyes wide, his pupils dilated into dark pinpricks of disbelief. His hands, usually so steady when threading a needle, were locked at his sides, curling into white-knuckled fists. He wanted to speak—to scream, to beg, to intervene—but he was a man who lived in the margins of the elite, and his silence had been bought by the paycheck that fed his family. The cruelty unfolding before him acted like a physical blow, pinning him to the floor. He watched the severed hair on the ground and realized, with a sickening clarity, that he was nothing more than an accomplice to the nightmare.
