Chapter 6 - The Unraveling
By the following week, the fallout from the Vance family scandal had become the lead story in every financial and social journal in the state.
The headlines were unsparing: VANCE FOUNDATION IMPLODES AMID FEDERAL BRIBERY PROBE. SOCIETY MATRIARCH STRIPPED OF TRUST CONTROL AFTER COVERT CUSTODY PLOT EXPOSED.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of their townhouse, Clara and Julian sat in the nursery, watching little Maya sleep in her crib.
Clara was finally beginning to regain her strength. The deep purple marks along her legs had faded to faint yellow shadows, physical reminders of a trial she had fought and won.
Julian sat on the floor beside her, resting his head against her knee.
"Agent Miller called this morning," Julian said quietly. "Dominic agreed to a plea deal. He’s giving full testimony against my mother in exchange for a reduced sentence on the embezzlement charges."
Clara gently ran her fingers through his hair. "Is she facing criminal indictment?"
"Yes," Julian nodded, his voice thick with emotion. "Wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and corporate conspiracy. Her lawyers are trying to arrange a house-arrest plea because of her age, but she will likely lose the estate to satisfy the civil judgments."
"How do you feel, Julian?" Clara asked gently.
Julian looked up at his wife, his dark eyes clear, devoid of the doubt and pain that had haunted him for weeks.
"I feel like I'm finally free, Clara," Julian said softly. "For my whole life, I thought keeping my mother happy was the price I had to pay for my family's survival. I thought her control was protection."
He reached up, taking Clara’s hand and holding it tight against his cheek.

"You showed me what real protection looks like," Julian continued, tears glistening in his eyes. "Real protection isn't control. It’s standing in front of the people you love, no matter how powerful the enemy is."
"We protected our daughter," Clara said, leaning down to kiss his forehead. "That’s all that ever mattered."
