Part 3: The Arrest in the Lobby

The grand, vaulted marble lobby of Richmond Memorial Hospital was typically a place of quiet whispers and soft footsteps, but at 2:32 AM, it became the stage for the public execution of the Voss family name.

Two uniform police officers escorted Cordelia Voss down the grand central staircase. Her hands were secured behind her back with heavy, silver metallic handcuffs, the metal cold against her tailored black coat. She walked with her chin pulled high, trying desperately to maintain the illusion of dominance, but her steps were uneven, her designer heels clicking erratically against the polished stone.

"This is a catastrophic misunderstanding," she told the lead detective, her voice trembling despite her best efforts. "My lawyers will have your badges before the sun comes up. The Voss family has funded the police gala for thirty years!"

"The Voss family is broke, Cordelia," Detective Vance said, walking beside her, holding a plastic evidence bag containing her stained white gloves and the hospital pillow. "And after the feds read this audio transcript, your lawyers won't even accept your calls unless you pay them in bearer bonds."

As they reached the heavy glass revolving doors of the main entrance, a figure stepped out from the shadow of the gift shop.

It was Adrian.

He was holding a silver flask, his expensive tuxedo jacket from the earlier charity dinner wrinkled, his dark hair falling across his forehead in a disheveled mess. He looked completely intoxicated, his eyes bloodshot and watery. When he saw his mother flanked by police officers, he dropped the flask. It hit the marble floor with a loud, metallic clatter, spilling expensive scotch across the polished seal.

"Mother...?" Adrian stammered, his voice thick and slurred. "What... what are you doing? What’s going on?"

"Adrian! Call Arthur! Call the firm!" Cordelia barked, her maternal mask completely slipping away to reveal the cold commander underneath. "The diner girl tricked us. She was wearing a wire. They have the recordings from the suite. Do not say a word to them, Adrian! Not a single word!"

Adrian turned his head slowly, looking past the officers toward the elevators that led to the ICU wing. His face didn't register anger; it registered a pathetic, childlike terror. He looked at Detective Vance, his lower lip trembling.

"Is... is Lily dead?" he whispered.

"No, Mr. Voss," Jonah Mercer stepped out from the elevator bay, his arms folded across his chest as he stared down the heir to the Voss fortune. "Your wife is very much alive. And she wanted me to give you a message."

Jonah walked over, stepping right into the puddle of spilled scotch, until he was standing directly in front of Adrian. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a second folder of documents—the unredacted bank records from the Voss Foundation shell companies that I had compiled before my fall.

"She says the forensic audit is complete," Jonah said, his voice slicing through the silent lobby like a razor. "The federal grand jury just signed the warrants for your arrest too, Adrian. For your signature on the seven-million-dollar insurance fraud rider. You're going down with her."

Adrian let out a sharp, pathetic wail—a sound so weak and cowardly it made the uniform officers look away in disgust. He dropped to his knees right there in the middle of the hospital lobby, his hands clutching his head as he began to weep hysterically.

"I didn't want to push her!" Adrian sobbed into the floorboards, his confession spilling out before he could even be read his rights. "Mother told me to do it! She said the bank was going to foreclose on the estate! She said Lily was going to ruin us! I didn't want to do it, I love her! I love Lily!"

"Adrian, shut your mouth!" Cordelia screamed, lunging toward her son, but the officers firmly grabbed her arms, pulling her back toward the exit.

"Take them both," Detective Vance ordered, his expression completely devoid of sympathy. "Get them out of my sight."
