Chapter 8: The Delivery Room

Chapter 8: The Delivery Room

The red Surgery in Progress light glowed above the operating room doors, casting a harsh crimson reflection across the polished hospital floor.

Daniel stood motionless, his eyes fixed on the doors that had just closed behind Anna.

For the first time in his life, he felt completely powerless.

His father remained beside him, saying nothing. Sometimes silence spoke louder than comfort.

A nurse hurried past with a tray of surgical instruments.

Another checked a clipboard before disappearing through the operating room entrance.

Everything moved with calm urgency.

Everything except Daniel's racing thoughts.

Then the elevator doors slid open.

The sharp sound of high heels echoed through the hallway.

Daniel didn't need to look.

He knew who it was.

Evelyn.

She walked toward the maternity ward with perfect posture, wearing a tailored coat and carrying a designer handbag as though she were attending an important social event rather than arriving in the middle of an emergency.

Her eyes immediately found Daniel.

"There you are," she said, sounding almost relieved.

"I've been calling you."

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he stepped in front of the operating room doors.

Evelyn frowned.

"Move."

"No."

"I'm the baby's grandmother."

"And Anna is the baby's mother."

She sighed dramatically.

"This family has completely lost its mind."

A nearby nurse approached politely.

"Ma'am, only authorized visitors may remain in this area."

Evelyn smiled at the nurse.

"I'm family."

The nurse checked the patient file in her hands.

"Mrs. Carter completed her admission paperwork earlier this morning."

She paused before reading the highlighted note.

"The patient specifically requested that you not be permitted inside the delivery room or recovery area."

The hallway fell silent.

Evelyn blinked.

"I'm sorry?"

The nurse looked up gently.

"Those are the patient's written instructions."

For a brief moment, something flickered across Evelyn's face.

Shock.

Then anger.

"She can't do that."

"She already has," Daniel replied quietly.

Evelyn turned toward him.

"So you've convinced her to erase me from this family?"

"No."

"I finally stopped letting you decide who belongs in it."

Several visitors sitting nearby began glancing toward the argument.

Evelyn noticed.

Almost instantly, her expression transformed.

Her shoulders slumped.

Her voice softened.

"I only wanted to support my daughter-in-law."

A middle-aged woman waiting for her own daughter whispered to her husband, "Poor grandmother."

Evelyn heard it.

She took a shaky breath, carefully playing the role of the wounded parent.

"I've loved that girl like my own."

Daniel stared at her in disbelief.

His father spoke for the first time.

"That's enough, Evelyn."

She ignored him.

"They've turned everyone against me."

A nurse from the prenatal clinic stepped out of the nearby elevator carrying several patient folders.

She stopped walking the moment she recognized Evelyn.

Her expression changed.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

She walked toward the group.

"Excuse me," she said.

"I believe I've met you before."

Evelyn looked uncomfortable.

"I'm sure you're mistaken."

The nurse shook her head.

"No."

"I remember."

She looked at Daniel.

"Your wife attended an ultrasound appointment here about two months ago."

Daniel nodded.

"I was traveling for work."

The nurse glanced back at Evelyn.

"You came with her."

Evelyn forced a smile.

"Yes. I was helping."

The nurse remained calm.

"I also remember asking Mrs. Carter whether she'd like a few private minutes during her examination."

Daniel frowned.

"What happened?"

"She looked at your mother before answering."

The nurse hesitated.

"Then she said she was fine."

"But she didn't sound fine."

Another memory returned to the nurse.

"As they were leaving, I accidentally walked behind them into the parking garage."

She looked directly at Evelyn.

"I heard you tell her that if she embarrassed the family again, there would be consequences."

The hallway grew still.

Evelyn laughed nervously.

"You misunderstood."

"I don't believe I did."

Before anyone could respond, another voice interrupted.

"I didn't misunderstand either."

A hospital security officer approached from the reception desk.

He carried a tablet.

"I was reviewing hallway camera footage after staff reported a disturbance."

He tapped the screen.

"We archive recordings from all public corridors."

Daniel looked at the display.

The video showed the prenatal clinic entrance from several weeks earlier.

Anna walked out carrying ultrasound pictures.

She smiled faintly as she admired the baby's first clear image.

Evelyn followed a few steps behind.

As soon as they reached a quieter stretch of hallway, Evelyn took the envelope containing the ultrasound photos.

She said something.

Anna reached toward the envelope.

Evelyn pulled it away.

Then she pointed toward the exit.

Anna lowered her head.

Even without audio, the exchange was unmistakable.

The joy disappeared from Anna's face.

She followed silently.

The security officer stopped the recording.

"Our cameras don't record sound in patient hallways," he explained.

"But the interaction concerned one of our nurses at the time."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Even one of the happiest days of Anna's pregnancy had become another moment of fear.

Evelyn looked around the hallway.

The sympathetic faces she'd counted on were gone.

Visitors now watched her with uncertainty.

The nurses stood beside Daniel.

Hospital security remained nearby.

For the first time in years, no one rushed to defend her.

She drew herself up.

"This is ridiculous."

"You have no proof I harmed anyone."

Daniel met her gaze.

"I don't need another argument today."

"I only need one thing."

"What?"

He looked toward the operating room.

"For Anna and our daughter to come through those doors safely."

Just then, the operating room light switched off.

Every conversation in the hallway stopped.

The doors opened.

The obstetrician stepped outside, still wearing surgical scrubs and a face shield.

Daniel hurried forward.

"Doctor?"

Her expression was serious.

"There has been an unexpected complication."

His heart sank.

"Is Anna all right?"

"The baby is in distress."

She paused for only a second.

"We need your decision immediately."

The hallway seemed to disappear around him.

May you like

Everything came down to the next words the doctor would say.

And Daniel knew that whatever choice he made would change his family's future forever.
