Chapter 9: A Father's Choice

Chapter 9: A Father's Choice
For one endless second, Daniel could hear nothing except the pounding of his own heartbeat.
"The baby is in distress," the doctor repeated. "We need your consent to proceed with an emergency delivery."
"What about Anna?" Daniel asked, his voice barely steady.
"She is conscious for the moment, but both she and the baby are under significant stress. Our priority is to keep them both safe."
"Do whatever you have to," Daniel answered without hesitation. "Save them."
The doctor gave a quick nod before disappearing back into the operating room.
The doors closed once more.
Daniel remained frozen, staring at the red light above the entrance.
His father placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You made the only decision you could."
Daniel nodded, but his mind was elsewhere.
He remembered Anna laughing while painting the nursery.
He remembered feeling their daughter kick for the first time.
He remembered every moment he had promised to protect them.
Now all he could do was wait.
At the far end of the hallway, Evelyn sat alone.
For the first time since anyone could remember, no one stood beside her.
The nurses kept their distance.
Hospital security remained nearby.
Even Harold refused to look at her.
Minutes passed.
Then Evelyn stood.
She walked toward Daniel slowly.
"I never wanted this," she said quietly.
Daniel didn't answer.
"I know you don't believe me."
"I don't."
Her shoulders slumped.
"I thought I was protecting our family."
Daniel finally turned to face her.
"Protecting it from what?"
She struggled to answer.
"From losing you."
He looked at her with sadness rather than anger.
"You didn't lose me because I married Anna."
"You lost me because you kept trying to make me choose."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was afraid."
"So was Anna."
The words landed heavily between them.
"The difference," Daniel continued, "is that she never used her fear to control anyone."
Evelyn lowered her head.
For the first time, she had no argument.
An hour passed.
Then another.
Every time the operating room doors moved, Daniel stood.
Every time, it was only another nurse carrying supplies.
Finally, the obstetrician emerged again.
Her surgical cap was still in place.
Her face looked exhausted.
Daniel rushed forward.
"Doctor?"
A gentle smile appeared.
"You have a daughter."
His knees nearly gave way with relief.
"And Anna?"
"She's stable."
The words washed over him like sunlight after a storm.
"The baby had wrapped the umbilical cord around her neck," the doctor explained.
"We had to act quickly."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Can I see them?"
"In a few minutes."
When he entered the recovery room, Anna looked pale but awake.
A tiny bundle rested beside her.
She smiled weakly.
"You kept your promise."
Daniel leaned over and kissed her forehead.
"No."
He looked at their newborn daughter.
"We kept it together."
Anna carefully lifted the baby into his arms.
Daniel stared down at the tiny face.
Small fingers curled around one of his.
In that instant, every fear seemed to disappear.
"She's beautiful," he whispered.
Anna smiled.
"She has your eyes."
He laughed softly.
"I hope she has your heart."
A quiet knock came at the door.
Harold stood outside.
"May I come in?"
Anna nodded.
He stepped inside carefully, tears already filling his eyes.
He looked at the baby for several long moments before speaking.
"I'm so sorry."
Anna reached for his hand.
"You don't have to apologize today."
"Yes," he said gently.
"I do."
He looked at his granddaughter.
"I refuse to let her grow up in the same silence that nearly destroyed this family."
Daniel saw something different in his father.
Not guilt.
Resolve.
Harold reached into his coat pocket and placed a thick envelope on the bedside table.
"What's this?" Daniel asked.
"I stopped by the attorney's office before coming back."
Inside the envelope were neatly organized copies of every recording, photograph, witness statement, and security video they had collected.
"I've signed my statement," Harold said.
"I've also moved the original hard drives somewhere safe."
Daniel looked up.
"You already did?"
Harold nodded.
"If anything happens to me, our attorney knows where to find them."
Anna looked surprised.
"You planned all that today?"
Harold smiled sadly.
"No."
"I've been planning it for years."
Before anyone could ask what he meant, someone knocked again.
This time it was the hospital security officer.
"Mr. Carter?"
"Yes?"
"A detective from the Family Protection Unit is here."
Daniel exchanged a glance with Anna.
The officer continued,
"He says he isn't here because of tonight."
Daniel frowned.
"Then why?"
The detective stepped into the doorway holding a slim case file.
He opened it.
On the front page was a photograph.
Not of Anna.
Not of Daniel.
But of another young woman.
"I believe," the detective said quietly, "your mother may be connected to another complaint filed several years ago."
The room fell silent.
Daniel stared at the unfamiliar face.
"What complaint?"
The detective met his eyes.
May you like
"Another daughter-in-law."
And suddenly, Daniel realized that Anna might never have been Evelyn's first victim.
