Chapter 1 – The Second Camera

The nursery fell into complete silence.

The tiny syringe rested beside Leo's worn teddy bear, its clear barrel glinting beneath the morning sunlight filtering through the curtains.

Beatrice's grip loosened around Mara's wrist.

"What is that?" she demanded.

Mara didn't answer immediately. Instead, she bent down carefully and picked up the syringe with the corner of a clean tissue lying on the bedside table.

Her face drained of color.

"This doesn't belong here."

Vanessa—my younger brother Daniel's wife—crossed her arms.

"Nice performance," she sneered. "First you steal medicine, now you're pretending someone planted evidence."

I stepped closer to Leo's bed.

The medicine bottle Mara had supposedly stolen still sat on the nightstand.

Its label looked...wrong.

Mara held it beside the syringe.

"The dosage sticker has been replaced."

"What are you talking about?" Beatrice snapped.

"The original prescription says two milliliters."

She pointed toward the bottle.

"This one says five."

A chill spread through my chest.

Five milliliters.

Nearly triple Leo's prescribed dosage.

Enough to stop a heart already weakened by months of treatment.

Vanessa rolled her eyes dramatically.

"She's making things up."

But Mara wasn't looking at her.

She was staring directly at me.

"You already know."

I nodded once.

Very slowly.

Because I did.

Not about the altered bottle.

But about something much worse.

Three weeks earlier, after Leo suffered an unexplained seizure despite improving test results, I had stopped trusting coincidences.

I owned one of the largest commercial security companies in the state.

Installing cameras wasn't difficult.

Telling my family about them would have been.

So I hadn't.

The nursery contained the visible camera everyone knew about.

But hidden behind the antique bookshelf...

Inside the smoke detector...

And inside the digital picture frame...

Three additional cameras recorded everything.

Every conversation.

Every movement.

Every visitor.

No one except me knew they existed.

Not even Mara.

Beatrice folded her arms.

"Enough games."

She turned toward me.

"Call the police."

"No," I said quietly.

Her expression hardened.

"What?"

"I said no."

Vanessa scoffed.

"So you're protecting the maid now?"

Mara remained silent.

She understood something the others didn't.

I wasn't protecting her.

I was waiting.

Because if I called the police now, the people truly responsible would destroy every remaining piece of evidence before investigators ever knew where to look.

"I need everyone downstairs," I said.

"Now."

Beatrice laughed.

"You've lost your mind."

"Maybe."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"But before anyone leaves this house..."

I pulled my phone from my pocket.

"...there's something all of you need to watch."

Daniel frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"The second camera."

Confusion swept across every face except Mara's.

"The what?"

"The camera you never knew existed."

Vanessa's confidence disappeared for only a fraction of a second.

Just long enough for me to notice.

That tiny flicker of fear told me everything.

Someone in this family knew exactly what the hidden recording contained.

And they were terrified I was about to press play.

As we walked toward the living room, I glanced back at Leo.

He was still asleep, breathing softly beneath his blue blanket.

Completely unaware that the people gathered under his roof were no longer arguing over stolen medicine.

They were standing at the edge of a murder investigation.

And before this day ended...

Someone in my own family was going to be exposed.
